Do you believe in luck? Anyone can answer, but I'm mostly curious about atheist responses.

If you do believe in luck? If so, why?

If you believe in luck but lack any believe in gods, why does luck warrant belief while gods do not?

Luck an event that happens for your benefit for which the cause can't be determined.

I feel lucky. I feel I am luckier than others. I can't say how or why just that good fortune comes in unexpected ways.
Also something you can't depend on for specific wants/desires.

It does make it easy to assume that some supernatural guardian is watching over you.

Some folks seem, from their own accounts to be mostly unlucky.

Maybe it is that if your mind subconsciously thinks that way, that is how you interpret the events that do occur.

Sure. I don't believe luck is concretely real, but it's certainly a way that we interpret the world.

Things happen.

In my view luck is mostly preference as to how and why we label certain things as being so over others, given that we might have as much bad luck as good luck if we looked back over life, and some understanding of statistics and probability will probably help, given as mentioned, those who practice any particular thing tend to be 'luckier' than those who don't.

In all my mountaineering, for example, I was seemingly lucky in only having had one notable incident where I required aid, given that most of the time I did concentrate on where my feet and hands went so as to be sure-footed most of the time. The few accidents I have witnessed were more down to attention being elsewhere than being unlucky - and often a result of interacting with others.

I do consider myself lucky to have been born to the parents I had and in the country where I was born, but this is purely a subjective view just as much as any others might feel the same.

If we all played a game where we all toss a fair coin ten times and the first person to get ten heads from ten tosses wins a prize, we would say that person who did was lucky. Because it is unlikely to get ten heads from ten tosses.

We don't have to believe in anything extra to describe that as luck, do we?

I'm not an atheist but I agree with some of the atheists in this thread. Luck exists in the sense that things happen to us that are outside of our control. Those things can also be interpreted as being good or bad.

Snakes and ladders is probably a good demonstration of this. Players have no way to influence the game so the winner is determined by luck alone.

There doesn't need to be a supernatural element to luck. Even if there is, I don't think it would actually be possible to demonstrate its existence.

Well, I know of the problem of luck in the field of morality, but that is not luck per se. That is randomness in nature and nurture.

Luck - a force that brings good fortune or adversity.

No, I don't believe, and now I suppose you want evidence for the non existence of this force.
