The mafia is usually four people, then there is usually a doctor, a detective, and a bodyguard or the like. So just special roles there are usually about seven. Then the rest are townsfolk. To have a really good game at least a dozen people are almost needed.

The amount of mafia can be taken down to three if need be. Starting out with 4 mafia and only 5 citizens can be deadly as the mafia wins when they equal or outnumber the citizens. If you start off with only one more citizen than mafia, and you lynch a citizen on the first day...the town is toast. So any less than 10-12 people will make for a very short game. About 14-15 is really ideal, but we have to work on getting plenty of active players.

YYoyou can play with a lot less if it's even more simpliefied, 1 werewolf to six people works 2 for seven makes a short game but works too.
