Maine: Same-Sex Marriage Referendum Will Be On November Ballot

AUGUSTA, Maine -- Maine voters will consider whether to reject a same-sex marriage law on the November referendum ballot.

The governor and state Legislature passed the law earlier in the year. Petition collections for a possible people's veto followed the passage of the bill."

More than 100,000 Mainers signed petitions to do what the legislature and Governor did not: allow the people of Maine to participate in the decision of legalizing homosexual marriage," Marc Mutty, Stand for Marriage Maine campaign chairman said in a release. "Preserving the definition of marriage as between a man and woman is far too important an issue to be left solely in the hands of elected officials."

I know that if I'm living in Maine by then (again), I'll be voting. How disappointing...

When my wife and I married, we found a secular officiant and stated explicitly that we want it stated out loud that there will be no involvement of government or church. Therefore, we chose purposely to sign no documents of any sort, yet all of our loved ones were there to celebrate with us, and even both sets of parents, who are all christian, say that it was the most meaningful ceremony they'd ever witnessed. We decided that as long as there are people who think they can tell other poeple what being married means, we'll stick to our own definition. I hope there are gay couples who find solace in the same idea.
