Man who Videotapes Police Could Get 16 Years in Prison

That's not completely accurate.

Police officers are not allowed to do a lot of things that are not illegal but that are procedural violations that can get them suspended, demoted, or fired. A good example of this is when seven police officers encouraged a teenager to pose for pictures in a booking area. Some were fired, some were suspended, but the DA said that nothing criminal took place so there were no charges filed.

OK. Well, whether or not it's technically illegal, my point is just that they shouldn't be able to do it. If that doesn't make it illegal, then I made a mistake in terminology, although the overall point still stands.

If you think that it should be a policy that most departments adopt, then I guess I wouldn't see any problem with that.

Like I said, I feel it's mostly a non-issue because most cops don't care about being filmed, out of the ones that do most won't say stop without a good reason, and the ones who will won't encounter a videographer enough times for it to be so important that it's legislated.

Yeah, I'm sure most cops don't really care, but the problem I have is with the laws certain states have against filming. I just want to get rid of those laws.

I can agree with that.

It shouldn't be illegal for civilians to film what police do.

I find it a bit demoralizing to scathingly attack all police officers as incompetent, rude, etc. Most people only experience traffic cops, and their prejudice develops from that issuing of a ticket.

Corrupt cops are a problem for many departments, and I think they should be publicly put on the spot if they purposely abuse their power, but that's a different story.
