Their sustainability plan is also highly debated. They have investors at the moment, but when the mission launches they plan on selling advertising space on their live feeds. They modeled this after the Olympic broadcasts. I can see it now...

I have been listening to a lot of Star Talk recently (great podcast, by the way) and they recently posted an interview with a man named Bas Lansdorp. He is the co-founder of a project called Mars One. Their mission is to create a colony on Mars. The catch is they do not have any intention of bringing the crew back.

Of course, one of the first questions in their FAQ is: Why a one way a trip? Here is their answer:

In the grand scheme of moral responsibility, is this a good thing to do?
Many skeptics such as Bill Nye believe these resources should be used in more responsible ways to explore the cosmos, do you agree?
If you were offered to go on this mission, would you go? Why or why not?
Do you believe this mission will be successful? That is, do you think they will be able to create a long-term settlement on Mars?

Well my wife knows and accepts that I would go, probably because I have no chance of being selected. My daughter though probably not. At 17 months she has been telling me I'm her best friend.

It rather reminds me of Roanoke, the initial English attempt at colonizing North America in the 1580s; although they promised to bring more settlers and supplies after a year or so...except a war with Spain and some other issues intervened...On Mars, there's no neighboring Croatoan to flee to...and I doubt our ability to send enough supplies and equipment to get them through even one year...
