New server got hired at work. Friendly older lady, but immediately starts talking about how great God and Jesus is and the such.

Now it's one thing for a religious person to genuinely have a positive experience with religion and then have a desire to express that with people. But I feel this is not ths case with this new server.

I've been in Christian church before. Pastors lay the responsibility of the eternal salvation of your coworkers and friends and all you know into your hands. Pastors beg and implore you to "save people from Hell". It is your responsibility as a Christian. The fear that most of the people that you know will burn for all eternity unless you hassle them into converting is absolutely drilled into many Christians heads.

I think that's the case with this woman.

I'm unsure what to do. It's aggravating me and several other coworkers, all her "God is good" talk. Many people have been jilted by religion and "god", something that many religious people just don't seem to comprehend.

I don't want to complain to the boss. Dont think that's neccesary. Don't want her to feel unwelcome like she's a nice lady it's just this particular issue.

A cook gave me a good idea tho. Me and him were talking about religion in general and how we don't believe in it and the new server walked by and he purposely started loudly saying that the modern depiction of Jesus Christ (in art) is actually based on a depiction of Michael Angelo's gay lover (painted by michael). He said it in the most condescending way possible to purposefully irritate the woman and she got hella mad lol. Started yapping about how Jesus is king of kings and stuff, even though that wasn't relevant to the conversation.

So I think if she tries more of her God talk with me, I'll bully her in my own way. Bring up the problem of evil and try to have a nuanced discussion with her. Flex my intellectuality, in religion in particular. Dissect her beliefs and try to show her why she is illogical or at the very least cannot be sure of her beliefs. And emphasize that if I was religious, I would be a Satanist. Wonder if her opinion of me being "such a nice guy" would change? I wager it would.

I doubt she gonna be open to actual discussion on God and religion, I'm sure she just wants to convert. So I figure she'll bugger off.

Oh she irritated me when she was complaining to me that the cooks were playing "Satanic music". Like ***** I used to be a Satanist don't say that like it has a negative connotation satanism is cool.

Advice? My plan sound solid or what?

If it wasn't at work I would say "Have at it". But if you do the same thing wrong that she is doing you could get in trouble If your boss is a Christian sympathizer you might be the only one in hot water.

The wisest course is to report her activities to HR and not to antagonize her. Yes, she is antagonizing everyone else, but I do not want to see punished as well.

Yea it might be wiser to do that.

It seems random when they fire people like when they should they don't and then sometimes they do unexpectedly.

I'll see if the new server presses on with her God talk and then probs go to my boss about it.

I think you should separate the behavior she is doing from the religious aspect of it. Even as a Lavenderist I would probably be annoyed if someone kept talking to me about my own gods while I was trying to work. I think the best way to talk about it is to frame it as bringing up sensitive topics that are unrelated to the workplace.

No. I can't see any scenario where bullying an older lady would be a good idea.

It depends on what kind of mask she's wearing...

Seriously though, simply tell her your not interested, and if she persists, tell her that you find her actions entirely disrespectful and that if she doesn't stop, you'll need to have a discussion about it with management.

I wouldn't confront her, it will have no effect on her and turn you into the bad guy.
As @Subduction Zone has said, best to report to HR, explaining how it's upsetting the staff

I don't understand why people can't be adults and just say that you don't talk about religion at work and that you wish for her to stop bringing it up with you. Then if she doesn't stop, you go to your supervisor because she's harassing you. It's not that hard.

It's surely should be easy except then you are victimising religion.

I don't feel that I have the knowledge here to comment on your specific situation, @an anarchist , so instead I'm just going to float a few thoughts from my own experiences.

I think it is very important to be able to express one's whole and true self in the workplace. To not have to hide very important parts of who one is. If you work somewhere that values human diversity and is openly tolerant of all ways of life and living, it is a beautiful thing to be able to just be yourself and be accepted for who and what you are. There are many examples of how this can manifest, from personal pronouns to just sharing fun stories with your co-workers. For some people, sharing fun stories related to religious practices can be part of that. It is for me. If anything, my co-workers have been curious about the kinds of things I do - granted, I work at university which is full of liberal-minded people who just like learning about diverse cultures and stuff. But it's great. We don't have to hide stuff. We can just talk and have mature conversations and share things.

I don't know if you can nudge your work environment into something that encourages mutual sharing and flourishing, but if you can? Worth it. When you work in an environment like that, it's like a second family and makes everything more enjoyable. You know you are welcomed.

No offense, but it sounds like a childish plan that's likely to get a childish response.

If it were me, I would take the woman aside and calmly explain to her that I will not tolerate her preaching at me at work. And that if she continues to do it I will lodge a formal a complaint. I would treat it as an issue between myself and her, first, and I would not involve any of the other coworkers. If she persists, I would then take it up with the boss. You have a right NOT to be ideologically harassed on the job. And no boss with any sense will tolerate it.

The tricky part is that you'll have to distinguish between her preaching AT YOU, and her just making aimless religious comments in passing.

Yea. I regard it as the days entertainment and sheer amazement at how people in this modern day and age can believe in stuff like that.
I’m amazed by the people in this modern day and age that blindly believe what science feeds them

My workplace was like that for a few years. And surprisingly, while the age range was usually(but not always) early 20s, we did get all types of political outlooks, yet everyone still liked each other(for the most part).

The job was an emotionally difficult one, and I think it led people to put aside their differences and just be friends.
