Hellenismos, BTW
New server got hired at work. Friendly older lady, but immediately starts talking about how great God and Jesus is and the such.

Now it's one thing for a religious person to genuinely have a positive experience with religion and then have a desire to express that with people. But I feel this is not ths case with this new server.

I've been in Christian church before. Pastors lay the responsibility of the eternal salvation of your coworkers and friends and all you know into your hands. Pastors beg and implore you to "save people from Hell". It is your responsibility as a Christian. The fear that most of the people that you know will burn for all eternity unless you hassle them into converting is absolutely drilled into many Christians heads.

I think that's the case with this woman.

I'm unsure what to do. It's aggravating me and several other coworkers, all her "God is good" talk. Many people have been jilted by religion and "god", something that many religious people just don't seem to comprehend.

I don't want to complain to the boss. Dont think that's neccesary. Don't want her to feel unwelcome like she's a nice lady it's just this particular issue.

A cook gave me a good idea tho. Me and him were talking about religion in general and how we don't believe in it and the new server walked by and he purposely started loudly saying that the modern depiction of Jesus Christ (in art) is actually based on a depiction of Michael Angelo's gay lover (painted by michael). He said it in the most condescending way possible to purposefully irritate the woman and she got hella mad lol. Started yapping about how Jesus is king of kings and stuff, even though that wasn't relevant to the conversation.

So I think if she tries more of her God talk with me, I'll bully her in my own way. Bring up the problem of evil and try to have a nuanced discussion with her. Flex my intellectuality, in religion in particular. Dissect her beliefs and try to show her why she is illogical or at the very least cannot be sure of her beliefs. And emphasize that if I was religious, I would be a Satanist. Wonder if her opinion of me being "such a nice guy" would change? I wager it would.

I doubt she gonna be open to actual discussion on God and religion, I'm sure she just wants to convert. So I figure she'll bugger off.

Oh she irritated me when she was complaining to me that the cooks were playing "Satanic music". Like ***** I used to be a Satanist don't say that like it has a negative connotation satanism is cool.

Advice? My plan sound solid or what?

I think it's worth trying to talk with her instead of immediately opting for peeving her off. For one thing, it can be perceived as bullying or harassment, which can mean your job if she reports you. Even if your supervisor/boss agrees with you, objectively they'd have to handle the matter based on your actions.

Try to give her the benefit of the doubt before deciding to draw enemy lines. You initially described her as a friendly older lady. If you are still on respectably good terms with one another, ask her to lunch or to go for coffee/tea after work and have a one-on-one conversation. If she's on better terms with someone else and they agree with you and the others, have them do it. I don't suggest a group because then she may feel ganged up on. Just explain that everyone basically likes her, mention some qualities people appreciate (lie, if you must) and then tell her all this "god talk" is problematic. That everyone appreciates and respects that she's found joy in her religion but it's not for everyone and not everyone shares her viewpoint. Don't admonish, present everything in a well-meaning way. Tell her you're only trying to be helpful and help keep everything harmonious for everyone.

Only if necessary, bring up whatever may be in the employee handbook regarding things that create a hostile environment and that her continuance is building discomfort among the rest of the staff. Don't threaten to go to supervisors or HR, just note that everyone has to work together and she wouldn't like it if the shoe was on the other foot and others were constantly imposing their religious views on her and making her feel uncomfortable or marginalized.

Closer to 4.5 billion and no belief needed, anyone can see it's old, very old, it takes millions of years for mountains to form.

Trying just being up front with her. Tell her, "please don't share with me".

On a side note, it is interesting how we can be one sided on this issue.

Take the music issue. If the music was "Christian" - would it be considered proselytizing? If it is, is her view on what is being played, that it is "Satanic" in nature, also proselytizing?

I noticed that you talked to the cook about religion... why can you talk about religion but she can't?

Maybe it is just that the light she is shining is touching something inside you?

In Germany, that would be easy. Money and religion are our two cultural taboos which aren't to be discussed in public, and therefore don't belong to (public discussion at) the workplace.

In case you live in the U. S., you might probably have some disadvantage if your boss is a Christian zealot, too. It could be that Christians might feel victimized and vindicated if their "religious freedom" is "limited" by non-Christians.
