I have a relative who has become a matcha green tea powder fan. Anyone know much about this stuff? The relative uses the Japanese product. But I have heard it contains a lot of lead, maybe that it fear mongering.

Help! She is an addict of "matcha"! Or should I buy her more?

I recall on the Dr. Oz show that he did recommend the Matcha.
Lead in Match is news to me. I wonder if a reputable Health Food store could be of any help ?
I have a friend whose daughter had seizures and they use the Matcha.
There is a Vietnamese restaurant about 15 miles away that has wonderfully tasting green tea, so apparently there are different types.
It would be interesting to first have a sample of your relative's Matcha tea lab-tested for lead.
There is a tea store that is a little too far away from me, but in the past I found some wonderful ' white tea ' there.
I know there are different grades of white tea, so perhaps that is the same for green teas of which Match is supposed to be the best.
Best wishes to you and yours in your search for answers.

I love matcha. It's basically ground up green tea to a fine powder but the process and the types of leaves they use make it more concentrated and it has tons of anti-oxidants. It's a good way to get energy without getting a crash, like you'd get with coffee because of its slow energy release. That's why Buddhist monks traditionally drank it, to keep them calm but alert. It's been part of Japanese culture for hundreds of years. It's really delicious if you make a latte with it, by adding milk if you're not a fan of it straight up (though I like it that way too).

I've never heard of lead being in it, and frankly it sounds dubious to me. I always get good quality stuff though, tea-wise. A suggestion take it or leave it, look up teapigs. They make proper teas (loose leaf like it should be and their matcha is super good), really tasty and good ingredients. Plus the company is ethical. It's a bit pricey but I think it's worth the quality and taste. Anyway, there's some info on their site about their products, you can find out more about matcha and where it's from and all that!

I've never heard of lead being in Matcha, I drank it all the time while I was in Japan. Also, I wouldn't trust anything said on the Dr. Oz show... He is insane. But either way, Matcha is good.

Thanks all for the great info! yes, the internet scare is probably hookie. I went out tiday to buy it as a present but had no luck finding it at (1) Filapino grocery, (2) County Square (Chinese Market), (3) Trader Joes, (4) Safeway mega store ....

So I will order it online.

Thanks again!

Chinese matcha, which is typically cheaper, is more likely to have lead. The plant absorbs it from the soil when it grows. Higher grade matcha from Japan is unlikely to have lead. This is a product where price usually does matter.

I get Japanese matcha from Kenko Tea, and they do lead testing and radiation testing periodically, with no issues so far.
