Meaning of the Son of God: Judaism DIR

Levite

Higher and Higher
I understand that this is the Jewish DIR.
But as I agree with what the Jewish members are saying about Jesus and the Son of God; I would add that Not all Christians have or do believe Jesus was the Son of God, Those with a Unitarian outlook would see it as a very suspect concept, in much the same way that a Jew might.

If this post offends in any way please ask to have it removed.

I know I for one am not at all offended by this post, though I do think that a fuller discussion of Unitarian theology vis-a-vis Jewish theology is better done elsewhere.

In any case, though it is certainly true that not all Christians are trinitarians, the majority are. I think this post serves as a useful caveat for us to remember, though for the majority of Christianity, the points remain the same, from the Jewish point of view.

In response to the original question, I feel it worth noting that in The Tanakh (the collection of books that the Christians call "The Old Testament") there are only a handful of references to Benei Ha'Elohim(Sons of God) , and they seem to be "Angelic" references of some sort.

The Nephilim spoken of in Genesis are called Benei Ha'Elohim, and the other references are found in Job:

"Now there was a day when the Benei Ha'Elohim came to present themselves before Jehovah, and Satan came also among them."-Job 1.6

"Again there was a day when the Benei Ha'Elohim came to present themselves before the Jehovah, and Satan came also among them to present himself before the Jehovah."-Job 2:1

Now as with many Biblical topics/verses, there is contraversy within both Judaism and Christianity regarding the precise nature of these references that I will not delve into here. This is pretty much all the Hebrew texts have to say about the matter however, and interpretation is always left to the individual.

This is not a place to argue the point. Reported.

What point do you feel me to be arguing out of curiosity? I merely posted some information I felt might be informative and potentially helpful to the original questioner. The blatantly ambiguous nature of my final comments should highlight my LACK of desire to be argumentative in any way...

Ah. Well, I see you have a religion title now, which you didn't when you posted it. I would think it wasn't the content of your post that was reported but rather the uncertainty if a Jewish person was offering an opinion on Judaism. That's a very important part of DIR rules, that only members of a faith can make authoritative opinions.

Shalom! and welcome to RF!

I'm not convinced. I've never known Boyd as a Jewish name.

That would seem to be a very unreliable way to establish Jewishness to me.

There must be many thousand of Jews, just in the US, who have converted or have non-Jewish fathers or whose families had involuntary name-changes when immigrating here.

Well I certainly did not post in these forums with the intention or the expectation that I would be needing to "prove" myself to some obscure (and seemingly insecure) person on the other end of an internet connection.

Yosi, if you are not satisfied with me then I have to tell you, I don't really care. It wont keep me up at night and I won't shed one tear...If that means that I am not welcome in these forums, then all I have to say is baruch Ha'Shem...for me this is all that matters.

As far as I am concerned, your "jewishness" is just as suspect as my own. Any "proof" you might produce on the other side of this computer screen is just as suspect. I do not question or accuse you however, because I honestly have better things to do. I would HOPE that you do as well...though your actions seem to be proving me wrong...

To all the others, I thank you for your gracious welcome.

I apologize that I came off like that. I have developed something of a hair trigger on this forum when I see certain statements that may be interpreted a certain way. If I'm wrong about you, I'm wrong, and I'm sorry for spreading any Lashon Hara.

:)

No hard feelings. I just think it's a little silly(and more than a little off-putting) to start off assuming things about someone, when they really haven't done anything to provoke such assumptions. (At least I don't feel like I did.) As I said though, I certainly have no hard feelings and I harbor no ill will; and while I do feel myself quite capable of arguing for whatever point of view I might hold, that is not why I am here...I am here as most other Jews doubtlessly are: To question and to learn, and perhaps even to help others find answers along the way. I am not here to troll, fight, or promote my own point of view above that of others...and I certainly have no interest in posing as something I am not in order to get my point across...

The various Jews on these forums doubtlessly come from a vast array of backgrounds and creeds. There are raised Jews, converts, and probably lots of of stuff in between; but most of all there are people with stories...

Long and varied stories that belong to countless lives...

May this thought humble us all...:)
