I haven't been there, but my teacher has. He went for "Umrah (sort of like a mini-hajj you can do at any time of year) and it is just amazing that as far as the eye can see, you see people in black and white, all going for the sake of Allah (I hope). I'm going as soon as I grow up, hopefully.

My ex-girlfriend was a muslim as a kid and she showed me pictures of Mecca during the pilgrimage, and it was extraordinary. Her father also made the pilgrimage and says it changed his life.

I went to Meccah for Umrah many years ago. It was a moving experience if you can distance yourself from the noise, hustle and bustle around you.

I understand it is even worse now, with VERY tall buildings close up and surrounding the Kabbah diminishing its place in the world.

Personally I felt more close to Allah in the north near Medina, at Quba and the places of Badr and Hunain. There was much less materialism there.

Meccah today reminds me of the section of the Bible where Jesus chastises the money changers in the Temple.

Anybody been there? What is it like?

I haven't been but hopefully next year God willing. Friends and family who did go told me it strengthened their faith and gave them a sense of closeness to God. And they liked the fact that everyone was equal rich,poor...they all had to wear the same clothes and do the same rituals..sleep in the same tents.
