Hi, everyone!

This poll is to help inform a staff decision regarding received reports. We are considering whether to send an alert to a member who files a report after we have reviewed it so that the member knows we have acknowledged their report and reviewed the reported content.

Is this something you would prefer us to do? Would it make a difference to you if the staff sent you an alert after reviewing a report that said something such as, "We have reviewed the report. Thank you for bringing this to our attention"?

Please note that such alerts wouldn't reveal what action, if any, the staff took on the reported content, because moderation on RF is confidential per Rule 2 and can only be discussed between the staff and the member whose content has been moderated.

Yes, I think an acknowledgment is a reasonable response.

I'm going to change my vote to "yes" -

I thought of a scenario where it might be useful. For example, if the report feature ever timed out (or more likely, the internet connection), no one would necessarily find out about it, without the implementation of this feature.

No. The above is indistinguishable from an auto response, while anything more personal and/or substantive simply adds an unnecessary burden to the staff who, as far as I can tell, is doing a good job.

How onerous would it be for the staff? How many reports are received a day? On the plus side it might reduce the number of reports since I have seen individuals clearly break the rules multiple times in one day. If one knew that the first action had been noticed and the wheels were turning one might not feel the need to report repeated violations.

If the action taken is not disclosed I don’t think it would add anything. So I voted no.

Why bother?
If sent, I know you got it.

As I don't report anything but spam, I wouldn't benefit or miss it either way.
Aside from that I agree with those that say this report doesn't add much transparency to the moderation process.
What I would like is anything that does add transparency. E.g. a public report on the number of complains and actions.

Not very. Once upon a time in forum days of yor we would actually send members a PM with, " Hi [*username*], this is to let you know we received your report [*copy of the report*]

Thanks for bringing this to our attention [Staff member's username]"

Now it would just be a matter of typing "Thanks" into a box and pushing a button.

Much easier.

That's an excellent point. Especially with the forum being so slow lately it's probably a good idea at least just to account for such slow and lack of connection issues.

Good point. I don't want to put any more work on the staff.

Edit: I should have kept reading, apparently not an issue.
