What do you suppose is the majority of motives for becoming a member here and participating in discussions?

I personally have been influenced and learned by the different view points from other members. I have to re-question and transform my understanding of reality.

Thank you for sharing.

Boards such as this help to keep the old brain works tuned-up with an endless supply of “truths” and possibilities to dissect and explore. I can agree or disagree, with humor or in all seriousness, and not be concerned with being ostracized and snubbed at the grocery store! LOL

I consider the motives of the members are to variable to generalize, but there are most likely mixed motives.. In some way most probably in one way or another are here to argue for their own belief system or perspective on one subject or another like science and politics. There are also motives to learn about those that believe differently.

Personally I am here to learn and argue for science for sciences sake. I also like most here argue for the Baha'i perspective, but than again much of what I argue for is not in line with the beliefs of the Baha'i Faith.

I also like to share my poetry and humor.

I do have an interest in what is the motivation for people to believe as they do.

I came here as a teen just out of high school with a chip on my shoulder and hating religion, basically looking to pick fights with Christians (it was a bad and miserable time in my life).
But that quickly changed once I realized the type of community that existed here, and it sucked me in as I learned and participated in discussions, and I've been stuck ever since.
Makes me think I need to revive the old thread we had then asking members if they prefer their paper folded or crumpled. :p

I came here because a question come up in a search I was doing and I knew the answer. But then I realized over a bit of time that there were some pleasant and intelligent people here. Besides, I love telling people what I think and there's a lot of opportunity for that :) And there are a couple of fun threads that keep me occupied. And above all, RF is a decent place on the Internet compared to the h***-holes that abound with nasty trolls and other dark creatures with two legs.

I agree, the people posting here -- even those that are at the other end of the spectrum from my views -- don't get very hot-headed as they do in some other forums I've visited.

Thanks, moderators!

Whether a person believe's or not, That's up to them. It's not my job to convince anyone. I just put out what I know then the rest is up to them.

Let's say your going into a jungle, Ok

Now how would you prepare yourself to go into the jungle.
Well first for me, I would take along a gun, It's better for me to have a gun and not need a gun, Then get into the jungle and find I need a gun.

So as for me, I'd rather believe there is God, then when I get there, There is God, Then believe there's not God, and get there and find there is God.
But then each to their own, Because it really doesn't matter to me, one way or another. Whether a person believe's or not.

What does matter is what I believe.to better to prepare myself.

Let's take Charles Darwin for instance. What alot of people don't know about Charles Darwin is that his father was a minister, and Charles Darwin daughter wrote about her father, That in his personal life That he himself was studying to be a minister.
As Charles Darwin dig deeper and deeper into the origin of the species, he soon discovered that someone or something had to be behind it all, That nothing this complexed could not possibly happen on its own.
As I was stunned to find this all out, as many people were stunned to find this out about Charles Darwin also.

I still remember the day, I was in my early 20's sitting in my doctors office, waiting to get in, that I saw a readers digest next to me, at this time the Readers Digest was a well known book that was reliable to read.
That I notice on the front cover about Charles Darwin and his daughter wrote about her father.
So started to read, I found things out about Charles Darwin that I never knew before.
And has stuck with me all this time, that now I can pull it all up on my Computer. Unto which we didn't have at the time of my reading the Readers Digest. That in Charles Darwin last few books on the origin of the species, There he explains it all.i've went to many libraries, that only those libraries with a much bigger selection of books, on the life of Charles Darwin.
Alot of people don't talk about Charles Darwin for this simple reason.
I never criticize the guy, all because I didn't know that much about the guy myself, only what I heard about him, But then that wasn't enough for me to criticize him.
Until that day I found the Readers Digest and started to read about what his daughter wrote about her father. That started me on my Journey to study up more about Charles Darwin and in his personal life, how he was studying to be a minister. Which hit me like a Shockwave. After being told by many people that Charles Darwin was nothing more than a Atheist.

It only showed me, no matter how smart a person may think they are, They will eventually come to a road block. As it did with Charles Darwin and many other scientist.

Drifting around various forums I came to this one, and there was a deep debate about Historic Jesus going on. That was me, hooked, and so I enrolled and started learning about so many differing ideas.............

And it's such good fun irritating @Revoltingest . :D

Your post is one of the reasons why I am hooked on this forum and the internet in general, they are so much better than the Readers Digest.

I believe that Charles Darwin would have been indoctrinated with religion from an early age and must have had a strong mind to contemplate his theory against the anticipated arguments.

Religious views of Charles Darwin - Wikipedia

He must have been under tremendous peer pressure to conform to society at that time.

Darwin's Theory's Conflicts With Religion - Charles Darwin's Theory of Evolution

He was reluctant to publish his findings until he found out that Alfred Russel Wallace was about to publish his findings.

Yes, the internet is a good way to get to more information, but all we had back then was to rely on was the Readers Digest and Time Magazine and the National Geographic magazine. For our source of information.

I signed up and began participating with the intention of furthering my research and study on theology and mysticism by gaining insights into individual understanding of people's beliefs and their experience with these beliefs, as well as to gain a better understanding of my personal experiences in my spiritual journey.

At some point along the way, the powers that be decided my time would be better spent here herding cats and cleaning up feces a few monkeys throw at each other. :D

That's "ape" to you, bub....don't make me throw something!
Monkeys are the ones with tails.

I came here because when The History Channel forums shut
down, I needed a new venue for flame wars & posting limericks.
But I haven't posted much doggerel lately.
