Opps! Just noticed this thread ...

"Keep your friends close, but your enemies closer still" - Mobutu Sese Seko (Dictator of Zaire) in 1972, two years before the "motto" appeared in the book The Godfather Part II in 1974. Niccolo Machiavelli never said this.

And neither did Lau Tzu even if all over the internet - I have never found the proof from The Art of War.

Also Mobutu met Richard Nixon in DC about a year later and said it again. Nixon liked the advice, but didn't follow it very well.
