Israeli's have installed metal detectors at a shrine in Jerusalem important to both Muslims and Jews. Palestinians are perpetrating violent protests, claiming the metal detectors "encroach on Muslim rights".

Wow! This seems like a pretty clear example of a demand for Sharia? One rule of law for the world, a different rule for Muslims? Yikes!

IDK if metal detectors infringe on anyone's rights. Banning any Muslim male under the age of 50 from entering, though, is another matter entirely.

I've been eating popcorn non-stop since they put the metal detectors up.

Next stop: Build a huge metal detector around Jerusalem.
Who knew it'd be this easy.

Right under the article you linked to about Jews and Muslims killing one another was another about the British baby on life support, whose doctors want to discontinue that life support, resulting in prayer vigils and death threats, presumably from Christians.

It is certainly hard to see a sound rationale for the Muslim reaction to the metal detectors.

Demand for Sharia??? Where do you get that from?

When you have highly emotive issues in regions as troubled as this one, the 'enemy' doing something seen as provocative regarding something of symbolic importance is highly likely to produce a hostile response.

That's human nature, not some 'no metal detectors for Muslims' aspect of the sharia.

[to be clear, this is an explanation not an endorsement]

That's funny...now they are just supporting their own stereotypes. I don't think there should be metal detectors in airports and whatnot though. An incident is just as likely to occur in a grocery store.

Special laws for Muslims.

Special laws for Muslims.

That's a very odd way to look at it as Palestinians tend not to recognise the legitimacy of the Israeli government to make any laws regarding access to the al-Aqsa Mosque.

It's not about "special laws for Muslims", it is about the 70 year long conflict between the Israelis and the Palestinians. To put it mildly, the Haram al-Sharif/Temple Mount area is a bone of contention.

Is it really that difficult to understand?

It's all about context isn't it? In today's context, everyone has to go through these metal detectors, but only the Muslims are claiming discrimination. They want special law for Muslims. You claim that it's a 70 year conflict. Why not claim it's a 3000 year conflict? Or 100 years, or 400 years?

You also seem to be skipping over why these metal detectors are necessary in the first place...

So are Muslims protesting against metal detectors in airports too? They must be surely if it is about metal detectors and special laws for Muslims.

It's not about 'discrimination', it's about ownership of sacred sites. Do you not understand why Israeli acts perceived as asserting ownership of, or limiting access to the Haram al-Sharif cause such anger?

For example, a previous intifada started when Ariel Sharon visited the Temple Mount without a metal detector in sight.

Because the modern state of Israel didn't exist then.

I take it that presenting the matter as motivated by Muslim pride against Israel is supposed to make it appear more understandable, more reasonable?

Why 'Muslim pride' rather than Palestinian anger though?

When the Palestinian movement was dominated by secular leftists in the 70s would they have been fine with it?

Non-Muslims don't always keep a calm head in territorial disputes either.
