Quick Poll for the many Metallica fans out there.

Do you prefer the pre Black album goodness or the later years? (1990 - )

Answer above :)

I'm a pre Black album man myself (Kill 'em All, Ride the Lightning, Master of Puppets and to a lesser extent ...And Justice for All)

My favourite albums are the black album (no better tribute to cliff), And Justice for All and ride the lightning. I don't mind the new album either.

St Anger was just .................... ?

Agree St. Anger was meh. Death Magnetic appears to be an apology to Kirk Hammett.

Well of course, they learnt how to tune their guitars properly and Lars got his drum kit back.

Wish they'd come on tour, i was stuck in New Zealand last time they toured Oz. They wen't to NZ, but i was in Gisborne :sad4:

LOL Gisborne is as far as you can get from anywhere in the North Island. Congrats _b

I prefer old Metallica. I'm not a fan of their new albums, except for "One".
They have a track called "One" but no album I'm aware of? ...And Justice for All contains the track "One" and is pre-black album :)

Kill 'Em All
Ride the Lightning
Master of Puppets

there was actually some disappointment with the production of ...And Justice For All though I still like that album.

The black album has some good songs but the writing on some of the songs just doesn't quite cut it compared to Battery, Leper Messiah, Welcome Home, Disposable Heroes, One, etc. Plus, I missed the long instrumentals like Call of Ktulu and Orion. Actually, I just realized I do not even own any Metallica albums after the black album. The last one I bought was St. Anger and I gave that to a coworker after listening to it once.

I've also noticed that when I talk to people who play the guitar and also like Metallica will usually mention Seek and Destroy as one of their favorite songs.

Kill Em All - Great Album
Ride The Lightning - A masterpiece of a metal album
Master of Puppets - An album that made Apollo jealous because he couldn't come up with anything better.
...And Justice For All - A very good album by it's own right, and sadly, the last Metallica album that was any good.
Black Album - A few good songs, but very overplayed, over rated, and really not that good.
Load - A piece of crap
Reload - A steaming pile of dog crap
Garrage Days - Should've called it "Diarrhea Days."
Garrage Days Revisted - "Diarrhea Days Revisited"
St. Anger - Or, as I like to call it "St. ****"
Death Magnetic - Really not that bad once I listened to it a second time. The Unforgiven 3 is over doing it, but at least Kirk got to shred some real metal riffs.

I havent listend to metallica for years...

I had a brief period when I was really into "metal" and I still like some of it...

but it all sounds kind of tiresome of late...
I actually like the black album, but I can see that its a, to quote Kurt Cobain
"Radio Friendly Unit Shifter"

...

I much prefer SWANS and bands that were inspired by or inspired SWANS...

throbbing gristle
Godflesh
Jesu

etc....

I just got the latest Jesu...

....

Metallica kind of disappeared up their own bung holes for me...

I think the sex pistols had the right attitude toward the Rock and Roll Hall of fame...

Personally, I don't find anything done by Metallica to be worthy of note. A pretty boring band, imo.

Don't get me wrong, the Black Album was good and all, but that album and the stuff that follows (except for maybe Death Magnetic) doesn't hold a candle to anything made before it.

Kill 'em All - Straight-up thrash metal. I think Kirk's best solos came off of here, seconded by Ride the Lightning.

Ride the Lightning - My 2 favorite Metallica songs come off this album (Fight Fire With Fire and Fade To Black). Could definitely be a contender for their best album or at very least a very close second.

Master of Puppets - IMO, their best album. Every track is a unique masterpiece. Very fun album to play along with if you're a guitar palyer.

And Justice For All - Great album, but doesn't have nearly as many strong tracks as it's two predecessors. Half the tracks can be pretty forgettable. And for pete's sake, but some damn bass lines in here finally. There is no reason why Metallica can't remaster this album and restore the awesomeness of Jason Newsted's bass for us to enjoy.

Black Album - Good album, but they ditched thrash metal for mellodic power metal and picked up former Motley Crue producer, Bob Rock....this was the begginng of the "dark ages" for them.

Load - Actually the first Metallica album I ever listened to and thought it was decent...and then upon discovering Fight Fire with Fire and Disposable Heroes, promptly chucked this thing to the bottom of the pile realizing how vastly inferior it was. Begginning of their "Alice in Chains" phase. Not bad, but not good either.

Re-Load - Very forgettable album.

Garage Days Re-Revisited - Both CD's were pretty good. Definitely liked the older cover CD better (Am I Evil and Blitzkreig = awesome). Probably the best thing that came out for that decade album wise.

St. Anger - My least favorite album by far. Sound quality/recording/mixing was awful, solos are completely absent, boring and over-simplistic nu-metal riffs, Bob Rock on bass....gah, it sounds like they were trying to copy System of a Down only they didn't come anywhere close. Some of the songs sound good live, but overall bleh. Best thing on this album was Lars' drumming (yes even with the "ping" snare drum).

Death Magnetic - First good thing about this album: Bob Rock is not producing it anymore and has been replaced with Rick Rubin. Second best thing, standard tuning is back (makes it sound more like their early stuff), thrashy metal songs are back, instrumentals are back and most importantly, solos are back! Best thing they've put out in 2 decades, IMO. I almost like more than than Justice, either way it's definitely up there near the top.

I like songs off of albums throughout their career. Each has its strengths and weaknesses, but it's impressive when any band can continue to write decent music over such a long career - particularly without sticking to the same formula on album after album.

Dave Mustaine wrote all those solos, Hammett just stepped in and played them. Mustaine got angry, decided to stick it to Ulrich and Hetfield and thus, Megadeth was born...

Most folk I know who know Metallica only know black album and later stuff barring a couple like Fade to Black and One. Quite surprised at the responses so far TBH, excluding YmirGF of course :D

I am old enough to remember a pre-Metallica world. ;) That is probably why I like the old stuff better.

That was David Mustaine. Even many riffs and solos on Ride The Lightning were wrote by Mustaine. The first all Kirk Hammett album was Master of Puppets.

As mainly a bassist every time i see the tabs for Battery i shudder...... not fun on the ends of your fingers this one... well that is if you're playing it properly.
