People think I'm naive and extremely sheltered. If I am in a room with people I barely know and one of them swears, they look at me and quickly apologise. I still don't know why people react like that. I am nowhere near as naive and sheltered as people assume.

People assume I am a bright young Christian man, but that's only because I don't talk much about religion in public. They also assume I am gay, but that's only because I find it amusing to pretend. :p

People often assume I'm an extreme right wing nut.
But after some discussion, they realize that I'm an extreme libertarian nut.....& that we agree about much.

By that, you mean that some assume that you're secluding yourself from other pips? Like an introvert or sort of like that? Sorry, MEH BED ENGRISH.:D

I don't think people see me as anything other than I am... wysiwyg. Now, I could list those attributes, but I don't think that's really what the thread is about.

I'm functionally aphonic (mute), so a lot of the times people might approach me and start talking to me; and if none of my friends are around to tell them I'm unable to speak, they assume I'm being a stuck up b**** if I just nod or shake my head for responses because it's too much of a bother to pull out a phone or something to write on.

I don't know. Everyone I know IRL hates me because I refuse to fall in with the crowd. Who knows why people think about me what they do.

You need a badge to flash (and nothing but the badge, despite temptation).
"Vow Of Silence".
That would fix'm.

Conservatives think I'm a liberal.
Liberals think I'm a conservative.
Baptists think I'm the Anti-Christ. (really, they've told me so)
UUs think I joined the board just for the beer. (that might be because at the first meeting I said where's the beer, I was promised beer if I joined the board)
There's more but that's a good start.

I have a card from my insurance that I can show to police officers, for instance if I get pulled over, that basically says that no, I'm not messing with them by not saying anything :p

An NSA badge would be way cooler.

It should be gold.

It was on fire when I laid down on it.
People often think I am a "nice," conservative, suburban, professional, soccer mom white church lady type.

Within a few minutes though, they realize the error of their ways. All I have to do is start talking about how I'm making kombucha at home, or my upcoming trip an hour or so away to buy naturally and humanely raised meat, or how my homemade filmjolk is shaping up, or where to buy survival supplies or my last trip to the shooting range, and they start looking at me squinty eyed.

I don't get along too well with most Baptists, Republicans, Democrats, or soccer moms. They all expect me initially to be gung ho about all their endeavors (because people see what they want to see apparently) and are disgruntled when they realize that I'm skeptical of their causes at best.

And you should see the surprise on people's faces when they visit my home and walk down my hall to the bathroom. That hall is lined with probably 50 or more photos of my family, and include just about any ethnic group you can think of. I can't tell you how many times some casual acquaintance has said haltingly, "So...errr...who are all these people?"

And the consternation or confusion on their faces when I say, "These are all my family! This is my daughter...and right here, this is my grandson -he's from Korea - and this is my son in law, the one from Panama, and this is my OTHER son in law - his family is Jewish originally from the Czech Republic..."

Though - to some people's credit - sometimes I get a thoroughly delighted response and suddenly the person relaxes totally around me. I always love that reaction.

By looking at your posts here, I also think that you're kinda hilarious. And I enjoy it.

Thank you! You're not too shabby yourself!

IRL, people do catch on quickly that I have a very active sense of humor. Some more stuffy types are unsettled by this, because I basically see humor in just about everything and I'm pretty irreverent. But most people are pretty positive with me. I enjoy making people laugh.

Humor is so ingrained in my personality that I can be inappropriate at times - like, for example, even in really scary situations I find myself making quips or suddenly being overcome with the urge to burst out laughing at some incongruous element of the scenario.

For example, we had an actual and very real tornado come through a few years ago - and I happened to be at my mom's house with a couple of my kids. She has a root cellar. We ended up rushing into the root cellar and getting under a table that was stored there. We heard all this terrible noise outside - honestly it sounded like the world was coming to an end. I looked around and the expressions on everyone's face suddenly struck me as hilarious for some reason. I mean, everyone was sitting there stock still with eyes so big they looked like subterranean creatures there in the dusky room. I couldn't control myself - I burst out laughing and said between gasps "We all look like Gollum!" We started laughing so hard we were nearly crying. I'm sure it had a lot to do with trying to defuse our fear and tension. I do that a lot and it's a sort of subconscious coping mechanism.

I had to deal with a lot of fear and tension in my childhood.
