When I get the chance I will head to the nearest phone shop to see about resurrecting the clamshell and have a look at a few phones. Plenty of second-hand ones available too I see.

I think the Sim is replaceable. Hardly trash if it does its job - which for how much it cost is good value.

Most of those the SIM is not replaceable. It'd be very unusual. Generally, if it's not a Note, a S series, or W/E the SIM isn't swappable.

The Sim is below the battery and seems to be replaceable (it's an insert). I'm not too bothered if I have to get something similar - one updated to future conditions - but it works OK and all the similar ones are from unknown manufacturers - Samsung it seems doesn't make a replacement model.

You could get a ghetto SIM from another provider that supports the older phone maybe, but who knows if it's locked or not. If it's one of those "burner phones" it's probably locked. If it's one of those though you just might as well get one of the newer ones as they don't cost a hell of a lot in the first place.

True, it's just the unknown manufacturers in buying another. I think I will let a phone shop have a look at it but will not necessarily take their advice - which will probably be to buy another phone.

I'm on PAYG and am about to get a new phone. I'm getting the biggest screened one I can find with the 3 shop, as I'm already with them. (75mm wide, 163mm height) - a Samsung Galaxy A21s. 32 GB. £170.

(honourable 2nd place went to Xiaomi Redmi Note 8T)

The thing is, I'm usually quite careful when purchasing electrical or electronic items, often will research reviews of many, and then balance up customer reviews with what my necessities are. Problem for me is that I haven't really been following the smartphone field that much but I do know it is rapidly changing and I don't want to be left having to update if I get it wrong. And of course I might be tempted in by all the 'goodies' they have, but might not use.

Agree totally. I don't follow the market either. I just went on the 3 site (cos that's where I get my data/time), picked PAYG phone purchase options and the two big screened ones under £200 were the Samsung and... er... the other one. I'm going with the Samsung cos it's a well established brand.

Same with me, in preferring a well-known brand. Experience I suppose, and not knowing how long they have been going or where they come from - I presume most is from China or around there anyway.

I bought one of these as a minimalist (Old git) phone whilst I look at the other options for a smartphone. Much like my old flip phone, it is slightly larger and will enable me to use it without specs if necessary. It didn't take long to get working (after I made an account with the provider (02) via the internet, when following the instructions didn't do such ) and the menu system is much the same as my old one. It's Chinese of course, and the instructions are a bit lacking - mention of a Clear button when there isn't one (for text input) - but it has advantages, like having a camera and radio, allowing for an SD card (which I installed), charging via computer or a dock (USB), and being 3G. It also has an emergency call button although I hope not to use this, but given recent events perhaps quite wise to set it up. Likewise, it will connect to the internet and do emails if I set it up, but I probably won't, since I much prefer using a laptop for such. I could probably have just installed a new Sim in my old one, but I've found out it was locked to Vodafone, and this one is unlocked. Useful features are signal strength and battery level on front screen, volume buttons, and a torch. Can't seem to find out how to switch vibrate off though (if I want to)! How good it is, only time will tell.

I'll have a look at all the likely candidates such as this, but at least I have a working phone now. Smartphones are so tempting.
