Yes, I have seen bad reactions almost drug overdose in nature for some after MSG. Heart attacks. No, it is not deadly nightshade, but ....

Another bad one is high fructose corn syrup. Bad.

I can't use the stuff. I have a condition that it complicates. I get an itching and burning reaction, dizziness and vertigo, and sickness.

I have to read labels carefully.

People have reported severe headache, flushing, sweating, facial tightness, heart palpitations, chest pains, shortness of breath, nausea, muscle weakness; and numbness, tingling or burning in the mouth, around the face and in the limbs, asthma attacks, and more.

Why the big hype about this type of salt. Is it addictive or is it killing us slowly

If used sparringly it isn't horrible for you. But it isn't good either. Some people have bad reactions to it.

A lot of asian food has this salt added to it (I have seen bags of it in asian supermarkets).

In a sense it tricks your tongue and brain into thinking the food you are eating tastes better then what it really does. It's chemical structure is very similar to LSD.

Monosodium glutamate (MSG): Is it harmful? - Mayo Clinic

What exactly is MSG?

Can't brain. Has dumb.
What makes it so tasty is the -glutamate. When I was at university, there was a lecture on msg and the theorised "umami" taste receptor. From what I remember, it would be beneficial in evolutionary terms to have a taste for glutamate - a nerve cell messenger, that shows up throughout the brain (I believe it's heavily involved in the pathways of memory formation, but it's been so long I could be wrong).

From what I understand, the problem with msg is that it fools the body into thinking it has plenty of glutamate, and so stops producing more, but the monosodium prevents it from acting in the same way. This then means the pathways involving glutamate are less responsive and slower to act.

Now, I'm possibly quite wrong in all of this - this lecture was probably about 5 years ago, and a lot can happen in that time! This is how I understand it at this point. I tend to avoid the stuff if I can help it. I do notice some food packaging now says "msg free". Even a few Asian takeaway places advertise their lack of msg use.

I saw a blind taste test that showed that usual symptoms reported by people with sensitivities to MSG were present or absent based on the suggestion that msg had been added. No affects after eating food that has msg secretly added, effects present if the cook lied and said he'd put msg in it.

I notice that people who claim to be intolerant of msg eat a lot of foods which are naturally very high in glutamate like parmesean cheese.

Then there's this camp of people who claim that glutamine is good for you while glutamate is bad, but it doesn't work that way chemically. Glutamate is the base that results after the acid glutamine loses it's acidic hydrogen ion, which it does in any environment with a pH greater than 4-5. In other words, there is no such thing as glutamine in your body, it's all glutamate. Eat pure glutamine powder, and as soon as it gets past your stomach it's glutamate.

Excessive sodium in your diet can cause artherosclerosis and heart attacks. Heart attacks can be triggered in someone with artherosclerosis after eating a big dose of sodium. MSG should be avoided if you need to be on a low sodium diet.

I wish the asian restaurants would start adding msg again. At least I'll still get a bunch of it in the hoisin sauce, soy sauce, fish sauce, dashi, miso, sea vegetables, etc.

As I understand it the issue is one of electrolyte balance. Guatemate is metabolized leaving behind an unbalanced sodium ion.

It's so nice to know the heart palpitations and migraine I get when I eat MSG are mythical.

I'm sure my son will be happy to hear his seizures are too.

Peanuts are just fine too.

Unless you have peanut allergy. Then maybe it kills you.

Yup, my son still has seizures. When he accidentally ingests something with MSG.

Do you happen to know the role of repeatable results in scientific inquiry?

As for your opinion on what suits me, thanks, let me just put that in File 13.

Mythical seizures? That's new.

Probably something unrelated to MSG. No repeatable results show MSG to be harmful, or necessarily beneficial either. Although, blind taste tests did show that when no MSG is added, if a person is told it has MSG in it then they exhibit supposed symptoms, it's psychosomatic.

Salt, extra umph, that is all.
