Modern psychology tells us being positive within and without are what makes us happy.
Interacting with loved ones positively, even people you don't know. The more altruistic the action, like giving $100 to a bum, the greater the reward.
Eating healthily and otherwise taking care of the body takes care of the mind and happiness as well.
Using those strengths you have that are universally accepted like humor, generosity, leadership, spirituality increases your happiness much if done everyish day or more.
As we enjoy our material things if we don't recharge the feeling and the body (the body and the mind) we will harm ourselves. in at least some small way. This damage is not preferable, but more research is needed in this area to say whether that is actually a bad thing.
We need to focus on the other as well. The more other oriented we are the more happy we are.
And so on and so on.
This is what all the old prophets are trying to get at "Good thoughts, words and deeds (Zarathustra)" "Love your neighbor as you do you (Jesus)", Maat. It is all accomplished by everyone knowing what makes them happy and striving toward that maximum self. This can be helped with a routine I formed based on psychology.
You should wake up and meditate 11 minutes, with finger tapping, EDMR, humming/chanting/singing/whistling and other easily done while meditating therapies including progressive muscle relaxation. Do as many as make you feel you're where you should be. Then do 20 minutes of moderate exercise. This could be a short bike ride, this could be any more than normal levels of strenuousness. Eat some fruit. go about your day. You'll have a solid foundation.
I discovered it on my journey to check religion with science.
