Morality

Hello everyone :)

Question: Where does morality come from? Do we need a higher being or religion to understand morals?

I think morality comes from what you saw as right and wrong as a child. If your primary role model(s) thought that stealing was bad, you most likely think that stealing is bad, even if you do it.

If your primary role model(s) thought stealing was bad, except when they really, really wanted something, then odds are that's what you think too. In my opinion it's all about environment.

A lot of people seem to need religion or a higher power not to understand morals, but to understand why they should bother following them.

Hold a pretty much identical view to doppelgänger on this.

Nope. However, if belief in a higher being and religious ideals is part of your worldview then your moral feelings & thoughts will have coalesced with such beliefs so won't have much meaning outside of such beliefs.

I'm sorry, I'm afraid I don't understand the question.
What do you mean by, "morality"?

I wasn't being clever. How can you decide where morality comes from when you don't have a definition of morality?

I do not have morals, I live by what I feel is right. And this may change depending on whatever factors are affecting me and my surroundings.

I'm so very sure no one could be a moral person without having an abstract, hyper-intellectual, completely academic appreciation for the ultimate ground of all morals. It's just impossible to live the Good Life without philosophy. At least, that's what my introductory freshman philosophy textbook told me.
