I agree with you Anders; that is what I basically do. However, when talking to a stranger, I can hardly refer to my wife as 'Marie' without explaining the 'connection' - same goes with kids.

Life was so 'elegant' before bras were burned; mind you, I cannot abide sexual discrimination; I just enjoy being a 'gentleman' to 'ladies'.:)

'Chivalry' was the reason many women were kept bound by men before the women's liberation. Anyway, I think it is fair for women to have the ability to choose a title that does not give away marital status when men have one by default.
