Music prohibited: why?

I see it like this... I enjoy music. I listen to some from time to time, usually at work. I have no time for the crap on the radio. But that's not the point I want to make. Whether or not I clearly see what any other Muslim sees I try , for the strength and preservation of the ummah, to leave subjects of contention between myself and Allah, swt. I have my reservations on certain topics and have asked for contributing opinions. But I will never ever assume I am in the right or try to convince another Muslim to change to my thinking. I find that dangerous to the faith. Allah knows us and most important, our intentions.

You're probably right, but this thread has shown verses from the Quran which have been translated by most scholars to be meaning the same things. I also want to make a request, that If one person is defending why they believe so and so, does not necessarily mean that they are judging the other person to be of less value or trying to de-mean him in anyway.

What I, eselam and fully veiled muslimah have expressed is what we believe in and have believed after much thought and consideration. That is not to say that all those who listen to music will go to hell( astaghfirullah ), all that is being said is, that it can substantially distract you and in my case I find that to be really true. I have to memorize the Quran, and I was unable to memorize so much of it, because songs would keep popping up in my head, so i understand that people who don't go through that, wont understand, but I Know why music is a distraction because it has really distracted me for the longest time.

May be there are people who don't get distracted, and initially I admit I could never bring myself to accept that music could be any bad since it felt so good, but when came the time to learn the Quran, this music became a nuinsance for me. And thats all I am talking about. And surprisingly to my astonishment, I never regretted leaving it, neither did i miss the joy that it used to bring. I had a very fullfilling replacement lined up , learning the Quran, and it just blew me away with its refreshing, powerful and soulful delight SubhanAllah :)

And only Allah SWT knows best. He is the most kind and most forgiving and may He forgive us all for our transgressions.

Please do not assume I was referring to you FVM or Eselam. I actually agree that there is harm in a lot of music, an although I have not forged a complete opinion on the subject I see the obvious problems with it, most notably what is modern popular music. I was just trying to say that we are sharring and learning and most important, IMHO is to preserve the cohesiveness of the ummah.

Yes indeed, very true and a very valid point :)
