I'm not saying the average Muslim does this. It's interesting watching their celebrations and traditions though.

I'm well aware that some Catholics used to do that. I find it unhealthy and I'm glad the church does not keep that tradition.

I'm sure there's still a tiny percentage left that does that.

Well, if God's not around to do it for you, I suppose you got to take things into your own hands.

You must be thinking of the flagellants. A very strange aspect of Catholicism. I thought that died out in the Middle Ages but I wouldn't be surprised to see a few existing today.

Pope John Paul practiced flagellation, opus dei use objects to cause them discomfort like a cliche, can be a hairy undershirt or a chain with small teeth that dig into the skin, strange stuff.
