Okay, so I am possibly considered left-leaning around these parts, and I am also definitely not a fan of the President-elect. But my eldest daughter is 8, and I have very deliberately avoided communicating too much of my religious or political thought to her, in favour of instead trying to encourage her own critical thinking.

What passes for 'critical' at 8 years old is interesting of course. I mean, unicorns don't exist that would be ridiculous, but of course Santa is totes real.

Anyway, there is a light-weight news/current affairs program here (The Project) which is fairly safe to watch around kids, and she caught Meryl Streeps awards acceptance speech, where she commented on Donald Trump's behaviour at an earlier rally. They showed some film of him when he acted like he was mentally disabled, and it was the last straw for my daughter (who is generally a complete space cadet, and floats through life...lol)

She immediately went and got her scrap book and wrote him a letter, without any assistance;

Dear Donald Trump

Don't poot the walls up! Why did you want to stop Mexicans from comeing to your cunchry?
Are you goen to get eny wun els out?

From E

Now I need to work out where to send it, since we're trying to encourage her to be an active participant in the world. Any ideas?

Cool. Thanks.
I might encourage her not to do her normal trick, and fill the envelope full of fairy glitter. I could see that causing some issues.
;)

The wall really is a product of the lax tack of the Mexican government. They silently sponsor the illegal immigration because it helps them. Is it our fault that we do something about it, or theirs for making the problem? (The government is actually handing out "how to sneak across the border" pamphlets, lol.) The border would be less than a big deal if the only thing coming over from there wasn't crime.

Anyway, I discourage this sort of activism for youth because you never know what list your name ends up on and the tides and winds change. Kids need to screw off as much as possible and learn, at least that's my take. :D

It's simpler for me. It's all balance related. If she was writing letters to politicians on every issue, I'd be telling her to chill. Since she's generally self-absorbed in a very normal 8 year old way, I'm happy to see her take an interest, and then take action, on issues that don't directly impact on her ability to access the world's largest collection of toys and movies.

As for lists...well...based on my search and library habits, I'm already on those lists, and she cops it from association, so...

Trump has a twitter account, and your daughter seems a lot smarter and more responsible than he is.

*laughs*

She also has way better hair.

After she wrote the letter, she told me she had thought about calling him stupid, but that would be similar to what he did to the handicapped person, and she didn't want to be like him. I gave her a high five for that one. I also told her that when writing a letter to someone, it was important to make your point AND respect their position.

your daughter is AWESOME

(I have to say though that my daughters are much older than yours, and while their grammar and spelling is better, they didn't lose their "hippie" worldview.)

Meryl Streep, can we deport Meryl Streep. What is she anyway, the queen of boring movies. Is it any wonder she is repulsed by any form of entertainment?

Oh, got ya.
Well, we don't want her. I've never seen anyone butcher our accent as badly as in Evil Angels.
