My Intro

Greetings to everyone who reads this.

It is my hope that this forums will be the right fit for me. I've been temporary members of a number of others but was banned from them for being argumentative, inflammatory, and for generally being difficult to get along with. I realize these are personality faults in me, and I will try very hard to behave myself while I am here.

I can't tell you what religion I follow because I don't follow one. I'm not an atheist or an agnostic though either. Religion is fascinating to me from an academic position, and I do read quite a bit to learn about different theologies. I just can't align myself with any particular school of thought. I find unresolvable discrepancies in everything eventually.

Debate is an activity I don't enjoy, so I try to stay away from the debates and prefer to stick to more light-hearted informational topics.

On a personal level, I hold some pretty strange beliefs and views. These have tended to be a source of friction between myself and other members on message boards, so I will do my best to keep my beliefs to myself since they are so at odds with the majority of the world, the majority of my culture, the majority of my gender, and the majority of my age demographic.

Thank you for reading.

the rules here are pretty user-freindly and so long as you aren't looking to force others to believe as you do, you'll probably be fine. based on what you've said I would be surprised if this place is anything but right for you. you sound exactly right as a member of our forums. plus being argumentative, inflamatory and difficult sounds like you belong here anyway. :D

fair enough. feel free to explore the forums, get to know its members and their beliefs.some topics will come up more often than others and don't be afraid to get stuck in. you can post respectful questions in the DIRs to "discuss individuals religions" but they are mainly intended for people of their own beliefs to discuss without outside interference. it can be useful if you have something specific in mind.

personally, my advice is don't look for a perfect system as you won't find one. its possible that a deity may be perfect- and that is a point that could be debated at great length- but humans aren't. we just have to get by with what we have. so find a belief that works for you, try it out and see if it makes you happy and a better person overall. there probably isn't a "one size fits all" religion and questioning others beliefs often helps clarify your own.

Whilst debates here obviously do get personal and quite heated at times, generally we are all looking for the same thing. we are looking for a sense of fulfillment whether it is by adhereing to religious orthodoxy, exploring new, exotic, alien and different beliefs or learning to live without a discernable religion all together. RF can be fairly welcoming and open (based on my own experience) because people are looking to try new ideas out rather than being completely fixed in their views. generally increased diversity benifits everyone so don't feel too restricted as you will miss out. there are plenty of fairly freindly nutjobs here and there are lots to discuss and much that can take us by surprise and come as unexpected. a certain level of craziness is healthy and makes people more interesting anyway so feel free to share if you want. :)

I appreciate the welcome. Thank you.

Other boards I have been on were strictly Christian-only, and I found them to be very off-putting. It's nice that there is a forum like RF where there are more views to look at. I do like reading the Bible, but I've also read the Qu'ran, the Bhagavad Gita, The Teachings of Buddha, and a lot of other stuff too and I've gotten something enriching out of all of it. I just don't like the whole "I'm right and you're wrong" dialectic that seems to show up so much...so I keep away from it. I'm too old to be arguing with people anyhow - I'm curmudgeonly and set in my ways.

I've seen your moniker before somewhere. If you can't be argumentative on this kind of website, then where??? As long as it is respectful.....no personal slander, I do not see why you would not be a good addition.

I was puzzled that you do not have any religion, but yet do not classify yourself as an atheist. My own feeling is that if you do not believe a god exists (yes, that is not the same thing as religion) then you are an atheist, or at least an agnostic. But that is my own view. I will not try and put you into a box.

I separate religion from spirituality. To me, religion is the customs and rites designed by people to worship a deity. Spirituality is the personal connection a person has with that deity. At least, that's how I rationalize it in my mind. I strongly believe in God, but I can't call myself a Christian, for example.

Welcome to the REF DM (an auspicious moniker as seen by a long-time D&D player's point of view).
Yes. Speaking one's mind on religion and politics is not only NOT frowned upon here,
the fools actually encourage it!

......and there was much rejoicing.

Ushta, and welcome! =)

Just curious... As someone who has an interest in different religions, have you read up much on Zoroastrianism?

Welcome to RF! There's plenty of lighthearted fun to be had here.

A warning: Some of us (@Sunstone ) can become a bit 'randy' toward newcomers. Just thought you should know.

Not very much. Not enough that I could speak intelligently about it.

Ah! It can be a daunting subject to learn about, but it is super fascinating if you are into theology.

If you ever are curious about the subject, feel free to shoot us any questions you might have at the Zoroastrian DIR! =)
