I rate movies on the basis of how many phrases are contributed to the culture and how often those phrases are quoted (subjective evaluation, of course). This puts Bogart films and Star Wars films high on the list, Ghostbusters also.

I tried to emulate your method and created a ratings system based on the things that matter most to me: craft, story, tone, score, relatability, empathy, and insight. Then I populated the list with every movie I've deliberated watched more than twice (there were thirty six that I could think of, not counting kid's movies), and came up with the following top twenty, listed along with their directors.

1. Whale Rider
Niki Caro

2. There Will Be Blood
Paul Thomas Anderson

3. Spirited Away
Hayao Miyazaki

4. Divine Horsemen
Maya Deren

5. Contact
Robert Zemeckis

6. The Way He Looks
Daniel Ribiero

7. Vertigo
Alfred Hitchcock

8. The Fellowship of the Ring
Peter Jackson

9. The Anthropologist
Seth Kramer

10. Casablanca
Michael Kurtiz

11. Das Leben der Anderen
Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck

12. Winter’s Bone
Debra Granik

13. El Laberinto del Fauno
Guillermo del Toro

14. Beautiful Thing
Hettie MacDonald

15. Psycho
Alfred Hitchcock

16. Wall-E
Andrew Stanton

17. City Lights

Charlie Chaplin

18. Star Wars V
Irvin Kershner

19. The Man Who Knew Too Much
Alfred Hitchcock

20. Singin in the Rain
Gene Kelly, Stanley Donnen

Some things I noticed about my own tastes:
  • Musical score matters more than I realized; very few of my favorites had less than a 5/5 on that category, and it gave Hitchcock an unfair advantage due to his long friendship with Bernard Hermann. I own the soundtracks about 2/3 of the list.
  • Apparently I'm very willing to take a hit on "story" if some of the other elements are excellent.
  • No movie has the theoretical perfect score of 35.
  • My soft spot for gay coming-of-age movies, and stories of anthropological interest, respectively, generate most of my unique entries vs other people's lists.
  • My "favorite" movies are not my most watched; my most watched are largely toward the middle of the list, and most happen to share the mean score of 28 with each other.
  • As noted above I wouldn't have said Hitchcock was a favorite director, but he's well represented on this list, while some of my favorite filmakers (like Werner Herzog) apparently haven't made any of my favorite films! So much for auteur theory!
  • Several films were only one point away from inclusion: Lawrence of Arabia, True Grit, Donnie Darko, and 2001.
