Nan Tien is in Wollongong New South Wales, about 80k(50miles) south of Sydney. This temple is a branch of Fo Guang Shan. It is the largest Buddhist Temple in the Southern Hemisphere. It was officially opened in Oct 1995 by HH The Dalai Lama.
The Temple runs Buddhist classes and retreats. Although non sectarian in nature, it is mainly a Pure land temple.

With a name like Nan Tien, it sounds like Qing Tu/Pure Land. So why was the leader of Vajrayana Buddhism opening it?

It's a super nice place. I go there like, whenever I have the opportunity.
It's a pan-mahayana buddhist temple, and of course allows all schools. It is from the Fo Guang Shan order, which is Humanistic Buddhist. They do have Pure Land aspects, but ultimately they fuse Chan and Pure Land.
I realllly like it there. I can spend hours just looking around, going to the Kuan Yin Temple, Buddha Temple and Di Zang/Buddha temple/pagoda; or just chanting or meditating.
They hold services, which are open to the public, and have meditation retreats, tai chi, and all kinds of other stuff. If you're ever in the area of wollongong, go. They even have guided tours!

It's rather ironic. They try to detactch from material objects like money and such but need it nonetheless. Well, its all about conciousness i guess.

Unfortunately in today's society , the old models for supporting a local institution like a monastery don't work as well as they used to. In order to have a monastery at all, they need to support themselves some way or other. No one has found a really good or comfortable way to do so yet.

Friend nayana,

You know the answer yet like others to contradict it.
Understand this:
Mountains are mountains
next : Mountains are not mountains
finally: mountains are mountains.

Being enlightened does not means one does not need to eat food to survive. Just surviving is not enough, one has to carry the message to such a limit that it comes back from where it all started and everyone does not have that kind of stored energy to physically and mentally do the needful and so the help of money [energy] is taken.
Here again if money is used for individual pleasure then it is being used against its spirit of taking but when used for the general good it is like the contributor is contributing to the whole universe but only through a medium which knows best to reach that whole.
