Musicians and singers will get a windfall because the Gujaratis have a tradition of raining Rs.2000 currency notes (equivalent to USD 31 each) on them. USD 761,000 for one 'bhajan' for this singer and his party.

Today is the first day, but you can check during any of these nine days at navratri garba 2017 - Google Search

Last night was a puja done by the ladies. It was more an archana. They had their own little places with a picture of Ma Durga, and a tray. The priest led chanting of the Lalita Sahasranama, with an offering of a pinch of rice at each name. That will be a nightly event for Navratri. I'm not sure if it was plain white rice, or turmeric colored... I couldn't see.

No regulation about it. Both are good. Offering rice is "Akshatam Samarpayami".

I do akshatam samarpayami in my little puja at home. I read somewhere that akshata can stand in for a flower or fruit or naivedya if you don't have those. If you don't have a flower, you can still say pushpam samarpayami, and offer a pinch of rice. I read that rice actually trumps all other offerings as best. The last batch of rice I colored got moldy. I wet the rice to make it take the color, and it didn't dry properly. This time I just tossed the dry rice with the turmeric. Next time I'll use plain white. For some odd reason I was finally coordinated enough to offer a pinch of rice while chanting each of the Sri Krishna 108 names.

Akshat can be colored with Kumkum also and it looks nice, but don't wet it to keep. Let it remain dry. Or mix them immediately before offering, some kumkum (wet or dry) and rice grains. See the rice grain below the thumb.

Durga Puja starting tomorrow. Kolkata Bengali-S will do what they do best. Eat everything under the sun and hop from puja to puja. Will attach pics as I get them.
