Post your neat fact

Rule 1. It must be understandable by the average RF member. This means no such stuff as:

If a, b, c = angles between the unit vectors i, j,k and R Then the direction cosines are set by:
COs a = (R . i) / |R|; COs b = (R . j) / |R|; COs c = (R . k) / |R|
Rule 2. It must be relatively interesting to the average RF member. This means no such stuff as:

Opioid neuropeptides were first discovered in 1974 by two independent groups of investigators:John Hughes and Hans Kosterlitz of Scotland, and Rabi Simantov and Solomon H. Snyder of the United States.
Rule3. Your neat fact can't be from the same area of interest as the one above.

'Cause it's my idea I get to go first. :)

There is no word in the English language that rhymes with month, orange, silver or purple.

I'll go with an Aussie one...

If you can somehow lift a kangaroo's tail off the ground, the poor bugger loses the ability to hop.

Don't be serious. Seriously
Your immune system is not allowed into your brain because the body knows it will attack brain matter. There's a "line" in your blood stream where the immune system is stopped and only messenger cells are allowed with injured viruses or other things it needs a cure for so the brain can make anti-bodies. Once the brain finds the correct compound, the messenger cell takes the compound past the "line" where your immune system is waiting for the ingredients to kill the invading virus.

Amazing Human Brain Facts -

The typical brain is about 2% of a body’s weight but uses 20% of its total energy and oxygen intake.

Your brain is 73% water. It takes only 2% dehydration to affect your attention, memory and other cognitive skills.

A piece of brain tissue the size of a grain of sand contains 100,000 neurons and 1 billion synapses all communicating with each other!

If you can read this, you are as lucky as I am.
JRR Tolkien could read 16 languages.

He invented 9-10 of his own (it's hard to estimate, as they were always in a state of revision).

And "nurple", a twisted nipple.

Data visualization came about as a result of William Playfair (great name, eh), who made drawings for James Watt (the high pressure steam engine guy). When he later became interested in economics, his graphic way of seeing things merged data analysis & art.

Do you know how difficult it is to meet all your rules when posting something about the history of machinery?
This was an obscure one.
