My puppy needs his nails trimmed, so how do I do it?

We daren't cut our dog's nails - they are all black, which means you can't tell where the quick starts; we make sure she gets to run on concrete, chasing balls .....

Very good advice here. If you cut the quick (blood line) it will bleed profusely. I had a rabbit that freaked out when I picked her up once and she threw a nail. She bled as if I had cut her throat, pardon the graffic.

If you are feeling a little uneasy, then go to a pro or a vet, but definately do it. A dog's paws will become deformed causing much pain, if their nails aren't properly trimmed. The natural way is to play with the dog and let it run and scratch the ground. If your dog doesn't get out much to run and play, then definately take it to a professional groomer.

I hate doing this. Luckily the dog I have now has mostly white claws, so I can see the little pink nerve in there. I have cut the quick on a dog before. It bleeds alllllllll over the place. Plus the pup will probably never let you touch it's feet again. I would take him to a groomer. Surely they would be happy to show you how to do it properly. And hopefully not charge more than $5-10.

Take him/her to your vet. That's what I always do. I was embarrassed, at first, that I couldn't do it myself, but when I tried, I cut too deep. I felt absolutely terrible. The vet doesn't even charge me.

We do the same thing with our dogs. Plenty of running on concrete will do the trick. Dulls those nails down in no time.

I have never cut my dogs quick. My mom did once though. If you do, be ready to get some cleaning supplies, cause blood will flow, and seem to never stop.
