Netherlands may ban religious animal slaughter

Good riddance...

I hope the whole world becomes vegetarian. :D Everything becomes kosher/halal! :)

I will not allow the continued enslavement of the producing species. COMMUNAL RELATIONSHIPS OR NO RELATIONSHIPS!!! wait, is farming a communal relationship? yeah, it kinda is. But we still have to not allow our producing species to become fully dependent on us...like lab rats, we must separate a section of the population species and manipulate them to our advantage. Although the moral factors become complicated with exactly what we can do to the modified/raised species, or if such can be done to the human species.

That's a common question. I heard one veg refer to it as the Sheep Apocalypse theory. :D

Those who push for an all-veg world have suggested that the animals could be cared for, perhaps used for purposes that didn't require slaughter. They could be bred in lower numbers, as opposed to now, where they are bred in large numbers for food supply. A nice balance might be attained.

It's unrealistic to think everyone would go veg, so I don't entertain the idea too much.

Yeah! An all-vegan world seems to be impossible. Humans evolved and so survived as omnivores, not herbivores. Why go against nature?

The question is what's really humane? Supporters call them barbaric, those who butcher call supporters squeamish. I think no matter how much "humane" animal slaughter become, there will always be controversy.

Yes, good question. At this point, I would settle for smaller, family-run farms where the animals are cared for in a more sensitive manner. When the time would come to end their lives, maybe other, less violent practices could be used.

I'm not a huge fan of stunning them ~ I've read that doesn't always work well. I'd prefer to see them euthanized the same way we put down our beloved pets. How that would affect the meat that is to be consumed would obviously have to be studied.

Right now, there is evidence that workers in factory farms behave as if these animals do not feel pain or experience fear. It's horrific. You do not need to be a vegetarian/vegan to be shocked and disgusted ~ trust me. Anyone with half a heart would flinch.

*nods* There will always be those who will not settle for anything less than their goal. Some vegans oppose the use of eggs from otherwise happy, healthy chickens off of a family farm simply because it's still using an animal.

I agree. I don't think the world is set up well enough to provide everyone with a healthy vegetarian diet. Some of us are very privileged to have access to the best nutritious food without having to turn to meat.

Why go against nature?

Actually, humans have evolved in such a way that allows us to survive well on a number of diets. Being vegetarian is no more natural or unnatural than living as an omnivore.

Also, some people thrive on vegetarian diets, getting more energy and happiness while others get that positive health experience from eating more meat. I guess this variance amongst humans is due to evolution.

Actually Madhuri it would be much easier to feed a vegetarian world than a omnivore world because breeding livestock for food is incredibly ineficient due to the amount of energy required to produce meat compared to plants. The issue would be primarily the distribution of food and loss of land for agricultural purposes.

I disagree with banning anything.
Seems unusually illiberal for the Netherlands.

On the other hand there's no 'nice' way of killing animals so I'm not into eating them and would welcome the unlikely decision of the rest of humanity to quit eating dead animal flesh.

But its so tasty :D

I think the decision is rather silly given the nature of the food we eat these days. As I stated earlier I was horrified to find out that all Pizza Hut meat is Halal. I think dialogue on religious requirements for food is needed before they start banning things.

The far-RIGHT support this?? I always thought the left was known for their secularism. I vote this bill be passed.

*Add on- This actually seems very liberal to me. Like the French school law that bans religious symbols among students.

I think it is obvious that animals should be put over religious freedom.
