Hi,

Just registered to this forum and curious to find out if more people are interested in Sophia and all the related theories, beliefs etc. around her.

Hi and Welcome! I have heard a little about Sophia. It seems to integrate eastern philosophy that I am familiar with. Not sure if there are any here yet at RF but it sure would be nice to have you around!

Hi again, and sorry for my very late reply...I am referring to the Sophia, mentioned in f.e. the Nag Hammadi writings.. (gnostic)

Welcome.

It seems to me that most people who know and discuss that understanding of Sophia would (at least currently) have a background involving Theosophy or one of the split movements that arose from it (such as Anthroposophy). There may be a DIR or two for those. If there isn't, maybe we should consider creating one.

Sophia is greek for "knowledge" or "wisdom". Also the basis for "Philosophy", i.e. afinity for knowledge, and a common female name.

What is sophia? Welcome to the forum:rainbow1:
Like luisdantas said Spohia is translated as Knowledge. But the Sophia is also seen in certain Gnostic views as either akin to the Holy Spirit, Personification of Wisdom, Or a Goddess and either Wife of God the Father or Jesus (but shouldn't confuse that statement with Maria Magdalena) and the lowest Aeon

Hi,

Just joined myself, and am currently reading through some Gnostic beliefs; as briefly mentioned by te_lanus, i believe Sophia is the Aeon who 'fell' and caused the creation of the Demiurge, who to the Gnostics is the God of Jewish and Christian faith, and is under the impression that he is the true and only God - he who created the material world and its contents alongside the Archons..

To the OP- I'd therefore say i'm 'Sophia-interested', at least if this is who you refer to. Over the last year i've been getting more and more interested in learning and understanding the various religions and whilst i do want as broad a knowledge as possible, my main reason for joining was to raise some questions I have regarding the Gnostic belief (I believe 'Faith' may in fact be the wrong way to reference!).

It'd be great to hear any views you have, but in the meantime I look forward to learning from everyone here!

It's more typical to ditch the word 'belief', and keep 'faith'. but I think you have the same concept.

Hi Requia - I mentioned it that way as i was under the impression Gnostics didn't really place emphasis on straight faith, more on knowledge of the 'true' God, obtaining 'gnosis'. Do both play an equal part though (or have i got the wrong end of the stick!)?

Faith isn't an important concept (I've only had it come up once in a conversation with other Gnostics). Belief is a depreciated concept though. When you belive things, you stop thinking about them, so its better to not believe things.
