AMERICAN MADE Human-modified stones excavated in central Texas date to more than 16,000 years ago. Finds include a spearpoint (far right) unlike any others previously unearthed at ancient American sites.

People inhabited what’s now central Texas several thousand years before hunters from North America’s ancient Clovis culture showed up, researchers say.

Excavations at the Gault site, about 64 kilometers north of Austin, produced a range of stone artifacts that date to between around 16,700 and 21,700 years ago, reports a team led by archaeologist Thomas Williams of Texas State University in San Marcos. An analysis of 184 of those finds identified 11 spearpoints unlike any others that have been found at ancient American sites, the scientists conclude July 11 in Science Advances.

Researchers have long argued about whether people reached North America before the rise of Clovis culture 13,000 years ago. Evidence from the Gault site joins other recent reports of humans venturing deep into North America far earlier (SN: 6/11/16, p. 8), which would take Clovis people out of the running for the title of first New World settlers.

Williams’ group estimated the age of the Gault pre-Clovis discoveries with a method that calculates the time since artifact-containing sediment has been exposed to sunlight.

Previous work at the Gault site uncovered Clovis spearpoints and other implements from roughly 13,000 years ago, as well as tools and other artifacts made by groups dating to as recently as a few thousand years ago. Some of the newly described stone tools at Gault, such as small, rectangular cutting implements, display similarities to Clovis tools, the investigators say. Overall, though, the earlier artifacts belong to a toolmaking tradition separate from Clovis, the team asserts.

I guesss I believe it. My big question is that if man has been here 16,000 years, and his natural sexual desires procreate at any average of 2-6, then why did it only take man the last 200 years to populate the entire planet into the billions?

16,000 years seems like plenty of time to advance further than where we are.

Personally, I believe the possibility that man were just as the animals until he received a "spirit" which is what the explanation of the Garden of Eden myth represents.

"Before Christ came, there was no bread in the world, just as Paradise, the place were Adam was, had many trees to nourish the animals but no wheat to sustain man. Man used to feed like the animals, but when Christ came, the perfect man, he brought bread from heaven in order that man might be nourished with the food of man. The rulers thought that it was by their own power and will that they were doing what they did, but the Holy Spirit in secret was accomplishing everything through them as it wished. Truth, which existed since the beginning, is sown everywhere. And many see it being sown, but few are they who see it being reaped."- Gospel of Philip

"And I shall teach you (pl.) what is the mystery of their life, which is the plan which they made together, which is the likeness of their spirit. The root of this (tree) is bitter and its branches are death, its shadow is hate and deception is in its leaves, and its blossom is the ointment of evil, and its fruit is death and desire is its seed, and it sprouts in darkness. The dwelling place of those who taste from it is Hades, and the darkness is their place of rest.
"But what they call the tree of knowledge of good and evil, which is the Epinoia of the light, they stayed in front of it in order that he (Adam) might not look up to his fullness and recognize the nakedness of his shamefulness. But it was I who brought about that they ate."
And to I said to the savior, "Lord, was it not the serpent that taught Adam to eat?" The savior smiled and said, "The serpent taught them to eat from wickedness of begetting, lust, (and) destruction, that he (Adam) might be useful to him. And he (Adam) knew that he was disobedient to him (the chief archon) due to light of the Epinoia which is in him, which made him more correct in his thinking than the chief archon. And (the latter) wanted to bring about the power which he himself had given him. And he brought a forgetfulness over Adam."

The books of Christian gnosis opens the possibilities of a different beginning than Moses wrote of. Jesus says a few times to John "It's not as Moses wrote and you heard" a few times in Secret John. Which must be true since Jesus says in Canon:

John 6:
32 Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Moses gave you not that bread from heaven; but my Father giveth you the true bread from heaven.
33 For the bread of God is he which cometh down from heaven, and giveth life unto the world.

Bread is knowledge. Once received (spirit) man could escalate above the animals that are without spirit.

You can't really call them Americans, though. Neither countries nor continents were a thing then.

Medicine and agricultural science. Prior to a couple hundred years ago, neo-natal mortality for both mother and child were crazy high and a large population couldn't have been sustained by meager agricultural production even if it wasn't.

Your artificial use of averages do not apply to primitive Neolithic Human cultures.

16,000 years seems like plenty of time to advance further than where we are.

Than who are we? A few courses in anthropology may help you to understand the reasons for the evolution of human cultures into civilization.

It is very silly isn't it.

Given the age of homo sapiens and other members of the family tree, 16,000 is bupkis, nothing. We've been around for millions of years.

Fighting for subsistance, short lifespans, not many of those children surviving to adulthood to pass their genes. It's been population growth ever since development of medical science and farming.

Short lifespans? The Bible said men used to live to be 600 years or more. Men used to have multiple wives as well. Go figure, huh?

I have no reason to believe that humans lived to be beyond the normal life spans in history and based on archaeological and paleontological evidence.

People were using fire a million years ago. Stone tools,
art, ceremonial burial of dead, very human activities
much more than 16000 years ago.

Population-

The maximum possible number of children
might be about 20.
So why is nothing resembling this number achieved?
Things to think about.

Given the chance, a single bacterium would produce
a sphere of bacteria in their very large numbers,
said sphere expaning ever closer to the spped of
light-but there would be a limit there!

Why are not the seas full of oysters? Millions of
rabbits everywhere you look?

The low population density of humankind for
many millenia is not hard to understand, in terms of
the msny sources of high mortality.

You go raise a big healthy family with a wildreness
and what you learned from your parents about
sharp sticks and whivh plants are good to eat!

It is a curious thing, how so little advance was made
for so long, with, say stone tools. Improved tools,
signs of agriculture dont show up everywhere at the
same time.

The natives of Tasmania-now extinct- were still
in the old stone age, the paleolithic, when Europeans
found them so. No agriculture. Virtually no
material culture.

Why?

I don't believe the numbers. For one thing, if people lived that long or even longer like some Egyptian kings, we would have had a huge population pre-modern age. Where I live there was maybe <30000 people when Augustus was Emperor and there isn't much in the sense of archaeological finds, but now the population is millions. Same kind of deal around most of the globe.

Researchers have long argued about whether people reached North America before the rise of Clovis culture 13,000 years ago. I watched a doc on this a couple of months age. The tools found are so similar to European cro magnon tools that it's starting a new discussion on the origins of he original inhabitants of america. Its not welcome by more conservative archaeologists.

Population growth was pretty static since humanity first arose. Only since the industrial revolution has it skyrocketed.

Similarity of tools is not a big deal. China was inhabited by human ancestor stone tool makers over 200,000 years ago. On the primitive side of stone tool making there are similarities world wide.

The progressive evolution of the sophistication is pretty much universal. The first differentiation of sophistication of tool making in the Americas comes with Clovis culture.

Perhaps they just had soup for 400-:D10000 years... but seriously, our parts aren't made to last. Even if we had everlasting teeth, our other parts would give up sooner rather than later.

When i say similar, similarity in manufacturing technique. Different groupings use identifiable techniques.
