News article references Satanism, why?

From our local rag, The Gazette;

Man said he strangles dogs to quell 'homicidal urges' | j - Affidavit - Colorado Springs Gazette, CO

Jones, of the 100 block of Tulane Street, said he pulled over in his neighborhood a week before killing his pet and strangled a stray black Labrador. He said he also disposed of that animal's body in a trash bin.
"Mr. Jones stated that he has been hearing voices coming from his basement, and in an attempt to quell homicidal urges, he strangled the dogs, which gave him some temporary relief," Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region animal control officer Kenneth Gingrich wrote in the arrest affidavit.
.....

The arrest affidavit said an animal control officer saw a Satanic bible on Jones' dining room table "along with a number of DVDs and CDs pertaining to Satan worship."

What gets me is, how many arrests are made where the officer makes sure to notate in the report that "A Christian Bible was found on a bedside table, along with several DVD's and CD's pertaining to worshiping Jesus Christ"?

Where in the Satanic Bible by LeVey does it advocate strangling Dogs?

Because people commonly associate satanism with scary stuff like sacrifices or vodoo or demonic possessions. I have no detailed knowledge on satanism, so I am just giving you the perspective of somewhat average person.

People rarely note Bibles because they are simply everywhere, and people are generally familiar with the commandment of "thou shalt not murder" and Christians spouting things like "Jesus is love"

Thus Satanists are viewed as much more dangerous on average then Christians. Just like Muslims are currently viewed in America as more dangerous then Christians

Thats the simple answer of perspective, whether you believe it should be that way or not. (you would have to start a campaign to change peoples minds)

Right next to the section on cutting the hearts from virgin girls.

Oh wait ...

Seriously though, Satanism and other "dark" paths have two unfortunate side effects.

Firstly they tend to garner media attention very swiftly. Every reporter hopes for a Satanic massacre worthy of Hollywood and they aren't willing to let background knowledge and research stand in their way. This is exacerbated by the fact that Satanism et al are deliberately shocking and so Joe Public tends not to know any better.

Secondly because these paths tend towards amorality, taboo breaking and even a certain degree of misanthropy they do appeal to the odd misfit looking for something scary to align themselves with. I can't say whether this was the case for Mr Jones as he sounds psychotic (unless that's simply a ruse to cover a sadistic streak) but you do get the odd sociopath associating with the LHP as well as plenty of angry, disillusioned folk looking for some kind of outlet.

I'm skeptical it was the actual satanic bible by LaVey more likely it was some random occult material and horror dvds and the cops are exaggerating or outright lying.

But anyways when you think about even if true LaVey's advice worked, he took life into his own hands and hurt animals instead of people. Obviously it would have been better if he got psychiatric help rather than hurt innocent animals, but this person is clearly disturbed.

A Christian would have probably heard God/Jesus telling him to kill people in his name and felt perfectly justified in it.

What gets me is that the arrested suspect never indicated that he did what he did out of Satanic belief or ritual. In fact, his wife indicates that he had changed since coming back from the war.
PTSD would be the prime suspect in his behavior. Not an officers observation of a "Satanic Bible".

But then again, this is Colorado Springs.

 I may not be a big fan of Satanism, but I hate ignorance far more.

Most cops I've met have been ignorant country-boy jock types who prefer to be ignorant, and are proud of their ignorance. They seem to think it give them some sort of "redneck cred" as opposed to "street cred".

These were "animal control officers," and whoever made this story decided to make this a big point so his article would look interesting. So find some other way to bash the police.

Which brings to the real reason this was mentioned.

Putting this in makes the article more interesting. I always remember to think about this when evaluating news, because everything is skewed towards what makes it sound more interesting. If they had found extreme amounts Christian literature strewn everywhere, that could have made an interesting story to, but there wasn't

Lol, if I was a cop, I would totally do this.

Ignorant discrimination isn't enough? If police questioned you every time you wore a personal "spiritual" symbol you would think it's enough. A cop at my college literally stalks me because of the pentagram I (usually) wear. But add planting evidence, arresting / killing innocents, taking advantage of their power... More than enough.

Well you can bash police as much as you want, and yes, you are right, the police officer should not be stalking you.

I was just pointing out that other than the "noting" the fact he is a satanist was not the reason he was arrested by animal control, who are not the police that patrol areas or respond to 911, or other suspicious activity. So you are free to assign discrimination to the police, but you can't use this story as an example.

I see, apologies for taking your post out of context.

Shouldn't this be another thread?
Not really.

It brings to mind once again, if the argument in the car had been over the boyfriend leaving the local Baptist Church in favor of the Pentecostal church down the road, would the article have read, "Deputies: Man throws girlfriend from moving vehicle over tongues speaking denomination"

It seems that Satanism=sensationalism.
