No sikhs around me

Trying to learn more about Sikhism. Getting down to brass tacks. Things like prayer, scripture or just someway to get started or at least give it a chance unfortunately there are no temples in my city so idk where Sikhs would meet.:help:

I love their food. BTW, at another website, my Catholic wife took a compatibility test, and her highest score was with Sikhism. I've been to some of their functions and have found them to be a very open people personally and religiously.

Huey ji there is a young man who goes to same Gurdwara as I and he has big hair so he covers it with one of those big jamaican looking wrap things people put over their dreadlocks. Can you get a bandana over your 'fro?

Never tried. could give it a shot. Or I'll just braid it down before I go. Saves me some awkwardness of squishing my hair down haha

1) its considered a way to show respect , even at home while reading Gurbani we cover head .

2) one can visit Gurudwara anytime ,there are no specific days . normally at sundays ppl are free from work ,so more visits at Sunday.

3)Sangat is a Sikh term with its origin in the Sanskrit word 'sangh', which means company, fellowship and association. In Sikh vocabulary, the word has a special connotation. It stands for the body of men and women who meet religiously, especially in the presence of the Guru Granth Sahib . Two other expressions carrying the same connotation and in equally common use are sadh sangat (fellowship of the seekers of truth).

Gursikh, I've always wanted to visit a Gurdwara. There is a large one here almost within walking distance. So if I went on an off time, just to look, and get the feel of the place, what behaviour would be expected of me?

you can do matha tek to Guru Granth Sahib ji , can listen paath /Kirtan if its going on for few minutes while sitting or you can eat or help in langar if its going on ..

You will need to remove your shoes, wash your feet and hands, and cover your head. As long as you conduct yourself with respect you can have a look around. It is nice if you can matha tek to Guruji but you may or may not be comfortable with that. You are welcome to sit in the darbar (prayer hall) - usually segregated one side men one side women, and eat langar in the langar hall (not really any rules with this one except enjoy the food!). If you are offered prashad at any time it's OK for you to accept and eat it.

Some Gurdwaras don't like non-amritdhari people helping in the kitchen so you might want to take your time with that and ask someone if it's OK first. My favourite job is drying and putting away dishes - I'm too slow as a washer and it holds everyone up, and if I try to roll out rotis they end up looking like little maps of Australia LOL!

I've been to that Gurdwara. It's quite lovely. Full of many wonderful people and great meditation & prayer. Plus the langar afterwards is great.

Treks ji , here at Sri Darbar Sahib (Golden Temple ) Amritsar and also everywhere in India everyone is welcome to do Sewa/ help in langar . if such restrictions are applied in gurudwaras ,then its really Sad n anti Gurmat .

lol , we have roti rolling machines here at Darbar Sahib , which rolls thousands of roti per hour but even that much are not enough !!
