What effect do sentiments like "he's in heaven now" have on you?

Its purpose is to provide comfort, but, of course, the person isn't in a non-existent heaven. They're just dead. Still, it's a sweet thought, however wrong it may be, so I honor the intention. I take no comfort from the statement itself, but I do from the person caring enough to try to provide comfort.
