Norway to ban circumcision, maybe...

My thoughts, exactly. Can you actually imagine a group of adults sitting around in rooms debating about this? The mind reels...

The same could be said about several other things though, which means smaller issues can never be settled before ( considerably ) bigger ones.

Later on we should ban Polynesian, African, East Asian, and South American rights of passage. Until all is conformed with the cultural standards of a white-European majority.
I can't believe what some social sectors are wasting their time on. Don't they have real problems in Norway?
I'm pretty sure that if you tried to do African tribal scarification on your child in Norway (or here, or most other Western countries), there's a good chance you'd end up in jail with your children taken away.

and may be that is where the difference is. Those that aren't Jewish, at least in the US, don't typically see circumcision as a "religious marker."

But seriously, I cannot see having this "religious marker" preventing one from not believing is a god or any god for that matter. Not like there is a national registry where you have to identify what religion you are and that you have to prove you are not circumcised to be a member. Unless that is the case in Norway.
The point isn't if it is a religious marker or not, the point is that you can't change your mind later in life and undo the circumcision.

I just spend a week in a summer house with 10 friends, a lot of beer and a lot of board games. We actually had a debate about this one afternoon.
I suppose this is the topic around here this cucumber season (named after the summer the EEC imposed a maxumal curveture on standard cucumbers which enraged many, many people who had nothing better to do than to write angry letters and articles in newspapers about how much they loved cuved cucumbers)

Well one of my friends turned out to have been circumcised as a child (for medical reasons in case you are wondering) and he claimed that he had callous skin on his penis because it was not wrapped up in protective skin like everybody elses. He didn't like that fact and would have liked to have his foreskin intact.

Did I mention my circumcision involved four lumberjacks and a hedge trimmer? I did? Okay, just checking.

They used the piece they cut off to make the skins for all the animals in 'Jurrasic Park'.

I don't see the involvement of four lumberjacks and a hedge trimmer a problem unless you objected to the procedure.

But that is the whole point here, babies don't have a choice. Their parents choose for them.
Personally I don't see what possible good reason parnts could have for cutting pieces of their children (unless there is a medical reason of course)

As a Norwegian I'm all for banning it.
It carries with it no documented health benefits and it is an abusive action taken against someone who is not in a position to make the decision themselves.
If someone really wants to be circumcised, let them make their own choice after they turn 18.
The religious argument is, as always, void and null.

I disagree with a total ban on it, however I fully support banning circumcising infants. If someone wants to be circumcised later in life for whatever reason, or unless it is recomeded for medical reasons, then it should always be the choice of the individual and not the parents.

True. It should be governed by the same laws as any form of cosmetic surgery.

I'm right in assuming that you are in favour of allowing parents the choice?
