I want to stress very seriously here that this is NOT A DEBATE THREAD!
This thread was sparked by comment between Mystic, myself and a few other members. I just wanted to create this thread so that people can have a chance to dispell some myths about either themselves or their people or something of the sort.
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE do not get to arguing. I just want this to be someplace where people can just mention some thing to make others see that group in a new light.
For instance, deaf people can talk, their vocal cords are not broken, they just cannot hear to know how to speak. Because they can't hear, they do not learn language the same way we do. That is why most deaf people only have a third grade reading level. They are not stupid, they are just very literal in their language.
Ex. the word running (yes, this has been posted before)
Running water, a running engine, a running person, a run in baseball, a run up a ladies stocking, etc.
It is natural for us to use context but since deaf people's world is structured and learn visually, you can't see water run... it falls. An engine doesn't run, it works it has pistons so the sign immitates pistons. A fridge doesn't run, it works but not a moving part so its a differnt kind of works.
there are more myths about deaf that i want to dispell but this is long enough!
