Obama's Speech to School Kids

I think he just means material "stuff".

However material "stuff" does lead to hangups so I suppose it logically follows.

:)

I have never thought that the average American had more material stuff than the average European. I wonder what the truth is?

I have no Idea what I would do with any more stuff? I feel no urge to convert all my cash into more stuff.

Exactly. That's the point. The average American feels that urge daily, which leads to them having more stuff. ATS didn't mean it was a good thing that Americans have more stuff (unless I'm reading him wrong).

Anyway, as to the topic of the thread, I just stopped in to start a thread on this. Yahoo put a story out about it here. Just when I think those Foxnewsites can't get any worse, I'm proven wrong.

Here's another quote from a parent:

It's one thing for a president to encourage all kids to work hard and stay in school – that's a reasonable use of the bully pulpit. It's another thing entirely, however, to have the U.S. Department of Education send detailed instructions to public schools nationwide on how to glorify the president and the presidency, and push them to drive social change.

"How to glorify the president"? Really? He's the freaking president! I'm guessing this person has a shrine to Dubya in their house. If the presidency shouldn't be glorified, then what should?

Another one:

I sent my children to school to be educated NOT indoctrinated.

Indoctrinated with what? The value of hard work and education? Heavens no! I mean, you couldn't write this to be any more retarded.

And lastly:

The idea that school children across our nation will be forced to watch the President justify his plans for government-run health care, banks, and automobile companies, increasing taxes on those who create jobs, and racking up more debt than any other President, is not only infuriating, but goes against beliefs of the majority of Americans, while bypassing American parents through an invasive abuse of power

The Republican propaganda machine is so very desperate because the entire Republican party is comatose.
Unfortunately, I don't believe the Repbulican party is anywhere near comatose, and this is shining proof of it.

They have been whipping up their base-- and moderates-- across the country with this the-sky-is-falling rhetoric about health care, taxes, the economy, the evil socialist president Barack Hussein Obama, etc.

They might not actually be doing anything productive for our country, but dang, they sure are making everybody wake up and smell just how peeved they are that Mr. Obama got elected president.

I'ma have to disagree with you here. The president should not be glorified simply because he is the president. Why, if you had to glorify the president simply because he's the president, you would have to glorify George W. Bush. Or even worse... Ronald Reagan. I wouldn't want my child to be taught to glorify them simply because they're the president, why should I want them to be taught to glorify Obama? If Obama turns out to be worthy of respect (which I doubt, seeing that he's from one of the two major parties), I would see to it myself that my children understand why he's such a great president.

STAND UP AGAINST IT. Tell your children the truth. Pull them out of public schools if it's that bad (which it is that bad, although not for reasons relating to this video).

Of course, I didn't actually watch the video, so I'm not sure how bad it is. Knowing Fox News, they're exaggerating if not outright lying, but knowing Obama, I certainly don't have a hard time imagining him trying to propagandanize all the children. Obama's all about rhetoric and glorifying himself. I'm not sure what to go with.

The important thing is to make sure you form an opinion without actually watching the video. That's the way we do things in Amurca.

The world is gunna tell your kids ALL KINDS of things,
via school, media, upper management et all...
then renforced by friends, neighbors,family...
and you CAN'T stop it.

Instead of trying to "protect" them from "ideas"
why not just spend YOUR OWN time with them
DISCUSSING things... from ALL DIFFERENT angles...
so that they might learn how to actually THINk for themSelves.

Why try and protect your kids from the opinions and outlooks of others?
Would it not be far more beneficial to protect your kids from the inability
to discern what they see and hear around them...
and think for themselves?

These things should be springboards for discussion.

That's all well and good if you want your children to be individuals, not carbon-copies of yourself.

Can you believe that this is actually an issue? It's the President of the United States, for crying out loud. Apparently he's not even allowed to make a back-to-school speech about the value of hard work and staying in school without being villified.

Obama's Plan to speak to School Children ignites furor in Dallas

Because, you know, Obama is going to discuss with all these children about health care reforms and taxation policies that even their parents cannot understand.

Maybe I'm older than I think.

Didn't Hitler make a similar move?
The adult support was thinning out. To further his own cause beyond present day, he began appealing to the youth of Germany.

I realize at this moment, this observation sounds extreme.
But with social tactics on the horizon..........

And of course Obama could schedule this 'historic' moment in prime time tv.
The parents could be right there to monitor the speech.

Makes me wonder how some people can be so dumb. It makes absolutely no since to keep your kid away from school, or throw a fit, because someone you don't agree with is going to encourage them to stay in school.

A bunch of people at a loss to understand that they are in the minority, after years of having it their way, they seem confused at people behaving like Obama is actually the president when they didn't vote for him.
