Hi AV1611, thanks for your post.
However, even if you accept the Bible as God's Word, not all commands in the Bible are for everyone. For example, God told Noah to build an Ark, of a certain size, for a specific purpose--he clearly didn't expect everyone who read the Bible to do so.
Likewise, God gave a specific command to Abraham--to sacrifice his son. This is now in writing, but at the time it was not given in writing--Abraham heard the voice of God and was willing to obey.
Do you think such commands--specific to individuals or particular situations--are possible today? Have you ever felt that God gave you a specific command? If so, do you listen to and obey such commands? Are there circumstances where you would not obey?
Peace
Hi, Bartdanr!
Here's my take on this. Yes, Abraham was asked to sacrifice his son, Isaac; but Abraham fully expected to return home with Isaac right by his side - (Genesis 22:5). After all, God had promised Abram that He would make of him a great nation. Thus the point of Abraham's obedience is that Abraham was trusting that God had the power, and the honesty, to resurrect his son.
There's an interest footnote to this story: In verses 7-8 of Genesis 22, Isaac asks his father where the offering is, and Abraham replies: MY SON, GOD WILL PROVIDE
HIMSELF A LAMB FOR A BURNT OFFERING.
And that's exactly what He did at Calvary. He provided
Himself as a sacrifice for our sins!
I do think God prompts us to do things that we should do (like witness to someone), but He wouldn't tell us to do something contrary to what He has put down in writing.
Are there circumstances when I wouldn't obey? You betcha! When I'm backsliding (which I tend to do often).
