Wow, I think we've finally found a big difference between Indiana and Iowa! Its kind of the opposite here. If you devote any time to anything that isn't education/career oriented, you're generally told you're wasting your time(or even your life), unless you've managed to cut yourself into a private group that feels otherwise.

In the end, its seldom about a love for learning but a desire for greater earning capacity(here).
Indiana has plenty of those types as well. As well people who have asked me "do you believe everything you read in a book?"

As a society yes. It's hard to be happy if you're dead.
But as an individual, clearly not. :)
This pandemic has made it seem like a yes. Not knowing and not accepting it have caused widespread--this has been needless and preventable--suffering, far more than what should have been. That has had a detrimental effect on not just the happiness but the well being, health, and life of others.

I think the not accepting is the biggest issue... its not real hard to understand the general precautions, but everyone thinks they don't apply to them..

Everyone who has said "your health is your responsibility" as an excuse for neglecting precautions in regards to the pandemic clearly has a lack of understanding of how things work. It's also a lack of thinking things through enough to realize the futility and self-defeating nature of believing the consequences of our choices and actions are contained within a bubble.
