I just deify nature directly instead of going with historical gods for whom I only share very roundabout ties and connections to.

Living in the middle of a continent, I have very little to no experience with Ocean, the Biggest of Big Water. I had some recently, by some fortune, as well as with Sky. It was a reminder of the triad land, sea, and sky - notably that Sea and Sky dominate even if that is not my experience dwelling where I do in the day-to-day. Our planet really should not be called Earth at all, but Water-Sky or something. Carry me on your waves

As a Hellenic, I'd honor Poseidon but, foremost, who are the gods of your religion? Which gods do you have an affinity for?

I guess some times I can be a little over enthusiastic, though...
Aphrodite is sometimes considered to be associated with the sea, having been born there and all.
Interesting, I should read more Greek myth. I only have a passing familiarity. I did not know she was related with the sea.
I have spent a great deal of time working at sea, so Ocean has been a daily interaction for me for many years. It's certainly a power to behold and work with, and well deserving of Respect.
This might be a little late, but I would suggest Guanyin:

What has been your experience of that? What wisdom and lessons do you feel you've learned? As someone who has only ever gotten brief glimpses, it'd be interesting to hear the insights of someone who has had more meaningful levels of interaction.

There is a TV program called, Wicked Tuna. As the name implies, it about the work life of a small fleet of yankee tuna fishermen out of Gloucester, Massachusetts. Conservation only allows each 2-3 person tuna boat to catch one tuna per day, to allow the tuna population to stay in balance. But one 500 pound tuna at $20/pound, can be a very good days wage. Many are sent to Japan.
These fishermen and women often look for the whales and the seagulls, together. The whales work as a team and go deep to force schools of bait fish such as mackerel, to the top, so they corner them and feast. The seagulls know this and they get their share as the bait fish jump out of the water.
The tuna also follow the whales up from the bottom to the top, to feast on this same food source. You will often see tuna near the whales, so keep an eye out.
The fishermen use sonar and can see the tuna as they come up from the bottom. They try to place their bait in their path and catch one. Whales help many other species to eat.

I could see saying something like, "Let my passage through this whale watching tour be safe. Let my mind be clear and thoughtful as I experience this. I want this journey I'm undertaking to be protected by my positive thoughts as I'm experiencing this."
If you want to throw around a water God you believe in, go ahead, but also remember that it is ultimately you and not those Gods that keeps you safe and protected.

It depends on the given myth, they state different parentage. One claimed she emerged from the sea and her name translated to "sea foam".Interesting, I should read more Greek myth. I only have a passing familiarity. I did not know she was related with the sea.
Theoi.com is a very helpful site about Hellenic gods and myths. There are a few others, but this is pretty accessible for any level of interest.
