Of Irish Heritage? Might this be of interest?

I'm sure there are thousands of Americans who will jump at the opportunity, but it just seems silly and pointless to me.

What would greatly interest me would be a reversion to the pre-1986 citizenship law. My father is eligible for Irish citizenship, but under the current law I'm not. If Ireland reverted to the old rules, I'd be eligible for Irish citizenship provided I got my father to register first.

Was your Dad born before 1948?
Could that get you a British passport?

I agree that it is a pointless exercise. In a sense, it trivialises one's heritage, reducing it to a certificate hung on the wall.

Acknowledging your heritage should be in the learning of the songs, stories and history of that culture, not paying some faceless government agency for the privilege of sending you a bit of paper, saying "CONGRATULATIONS!!!! You have won the right to call yourself _________ (insert culture as appropriate)."

Is everything becoming a commodity these days?

AFAIK everyone born anywhere in Ireland before '48 has a right to a British passport, maybe it could be useful for you.

No, my father wasn't born in Ireland; he's only eligible to register as a citizen because his grandmother was. :(

if you could play international soccer I'm sure you'd find that you're overqualified for an Irish passport :D

Still, it might be worth checking if you could get a UK one, or you could just come and stay. I can't imagine they'd deport you :)
