The American Freedom Defense Initiative is a hate group.
The Southern Poverty Law Center, which tracks hate groups and extremist groups* in the U.S. has listed the American Freedom Defense Initiative as an active anti-Muslim extremist group since 2011.
The group's leader, Pamela Geller, is among the top ten anti-Muslim extremists in the U.S. Her activities have gotten her banned from entering the United Kingdom.
The American Freedom Defense Initiative isn't the poster child for first amendment rights (i.e. Freedom of Speech). They're bigoted opponents of the first amendment (i.e. Freedom of Religion). They may have the legal right to say what they say, but that doesn't obligate the rest of us to support what they really are at heart.
