Hmm.
I understood that the "gnosticness" of Thomas wasn't all that conclusive. Some scholars posit that it contains gnostic elements, but that the Thomas community was not Gnostic.

It all depends on how you date Thomas and define gnosticism (and its date).

I used to think that Thomas is too early and simple to contain gnosticism, compared to the other writings in Nag Hammadhi.

But after reading it a few more times and comparing it to the canonical Gospels, I think that more than 90% of Thomas indicates redactions that betray theological revision and development. Some material appears unchanged and original, but we're talking two sentences or so.

It seems to me that the nature of Thomas demonstrates that "gnosticism" was as early as Bauer thought. I think that the community that produced Thomas as "gnostic" but a strain of "gnosticism" that was not described by Christian apologists and barely represented in Nag Hammadhi.
