Because of Scout policies, I am assuming that the Scout executives involved are not atheists, agnostics or gays and, therefore, are most likely religious, upstanding, god-fearing pillars of the community with impeccable morals and strong "family values."

YEAH...RIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have suggested before that the Scouts change their motto to:

"Be Prepared to go STRAIGHT to Heaven!"

It has nothing to do with Scout Leaders. It has everything to do with Scout Executives. Please read the story my friend. The volunteers are not the problem here.

Obviously, you are not too familiar with them then.
Yeah, they are more like missionaries in and to the wilderness (In the broadest and kindly sense)

It has long been my opinion that the paid professionals have TOO MUCH POWER and that this needs to be relegated BACK to the volunteers. I am sickened by this!
Well, let's see....they don't allow gays because it's against their Christian values. Strikes me that everyone who lied (which is also against Christian values) should be booted out as well....right before they send their butts off to prison for fraud.

I managed to infiltrate their ranks for 3 years when I was but a wee atheist.

They never even knew...shhhhhhhhhh!!!!

The really funny thing is the only homosexual activity I`ve ever been personally involved with happened at a scout camp.

One of the other little cubbies got a bit overactive on my leg.

The thought still slays me.

Actually Baden-Powell formed the scouts so that the Empire would never be short of soldiers.

Melody,

Christianity is not the only religion covered by the Scouts.

It's obvious though that quite a few of you are BIGOTED towards Scouts. I find this just as tragic as being bigoted towards any group. You find it easier to call them fascists and condemn them with little thought or investigation as to what they are about. You make me want to puke. You don't understand so you simply tear down. What intestinal fortitude you must possess. As ashamed as I am of what happened in this news article I am far more ashamed by your judgemental attitudes. How sad.

Doc I understand your feelings and I myself have tried to make light of this thread up to this point.
I don`t believe I have "torn down" at anything.

I just want to ask you to understand why many people dislike the Boy Scouts.

When you disallow someone because of their religious beliefs or sexuality you`re discriminating which is making a statement about that group of people whether you intend to do so publicly or not.

This statement is extremely negative.
To make that statement about an innocent child when you claim to be an organization supporting children it is even more abhorrent.

Many people (Myself included) see the scouts as an organization that breeds intolerance because of it`s discriminatory policies.

They have that right but those they discriminate against have the right to speak out against it in any way they feel like.

When one so publicly preaches one thing as a major part of it`s ideology and then is discovered to be spitting on their own ethical code for personal gain well...they`re kinda asking for it.

First of all... I have issues with the "God" doctrine by the Scouts. However, we don't call Catholics "intolerant" just because they don't allow athiests to be priests, now do we? Looks like a double standard here to me.

As for "Gays"... the Scouts don't allow any discussion of sex. They feel that this is for the families to address. You won't find a box asking for sexual orientation on the Scout or Scouter application. Scout literature does not forbid "Gays", it forbids "avowed homosexuals". The intent was not to drive homosexuals out of Scouting, but to not let the BSA become a political football for those who would make it such. If you want to discuss sexual orientation, please choose another avenue. Heck, they don't even allow unmarried couples to share the same tent on a Scouting function.

I would suggest to you that it is not in the best interest of political interest groups to be completely honest. This is true here. Instead of presenting the TRUTH, they have distorted it to portray the Scouts in as bad a light as possible. You have bought the same load of crapola... why? Because you have not researched what the Scouts really stand for.

But what about Scout's history? We were racially integrated WAY before the rest of the nation... even before there were any laws passed. We are known for our diversity. Don't believe me? Here check out this link: http://www.scouting.org/nav/enter.jsp?s=xx&c=ds&terms=gays&x=30&y=12 and this link http://www.scouting.org/nav/enter.jsp?s=xx&c=ds&terms=gays&x=30&y=12 .

It's one thing to be ignorant... it's quite another to spew ignorant victive against a group because you have not researched the truth. It's so much easier to accept the word of political interest groups at face value and join in libeling a patriotic orginization.

I tell you the truth, if I had a clue how biased some were, I would never have brought this up. You can be sure I WON'T make the same mistake again. It's absolutely disgusting.

The Boy Scouts, as I understand it, only discriminate against those in leadership roles (troop leaders). Scouts are not. Of course, it would be rare for a Scout to know he is homosexual until orientation is completly manifested. And that , takes place at puberty and near the end of most scouting memberships (I believe- but could be wrong with the ages of scouting). There is no discrimination, as a general rule, for the other categories of males.

Out of curiosity, now that gay marriage is legal in some states, would they let same-sex married couples sleep in the same tent?

Actually, what's an "avowed homosexual," anyway? :sarcastic
