On The Nature of Truth

“Truth is many-sided. Have patience for those who do not see as you do.”

What an interesting statement to me. I discussed this Reminder with my Swami, who – as always – gave me a very perceptive and deeply insightful response to this. However, I first would like to open the floor to your perspectives on Truth? Do you agree with the above statement? Do you disagree? What, to you, is the nature of Truth?

I see truth as being absolute; however, our understanding of truth is based on our personal experiences so I can agree with the statement.

truth for a complex se-er is complicated , it gets very simple at its core and then again it breaks down into complexity and its an endless cycle of infinity upwards and downwards all side-wards. if the observer of this truth tells you this is the truth then he too is in-effect simplifying a complexity which makes it un true .

I see truth as not an aspect or sphere that is outside our ability to understand. I see it as reality and learning about life in and of itself, our role with others, ourselves, and things of that nature. I see truth as inside ourselves, not mysterious, just the patience and discipline to act one's virtues and morals until one passes away.

To me the Truth is One but is beyond the limited intellect so appears many sided. The "blind men and the elephant" story expresses how I view it.

The truth knocks on the door and you say, "Go away, I'm looking for the truth" and so it goes away. Puzzling.

I see truth as being a constant.

Truth applies, as an example, just as much with honesty and accuracy, as it is with truth that comes out through lies and deception.

“Truth is many-sided...
So far, so good. There are those who are comfortable with just seeing one side. And then there are those that do what they can to see as many sides as possible. I belong to the latter group.

...Have patience for those who do not see as you do.”

Uh...Why? Is this a requisite for understanding truth? I should be patient with those that cling tightly to their side of the truth and refuse to look at another side, even if it's being shown to them?

Nothing my eye, Something for sure
i never understood what people meant by the word truth. is it honesty as deserves? is it the nature of reality? is it about eternal life? is it just the facts? is it matters of the heart? is it ultimate logic? who's logic? is it foundational justice for all? is it peace and love? is it virtues?

maybe it's loyalty to loyalty itself. love for the sake of love, compassion for it's sake. maybe it's all depending on the situation and what is deserved and what belongs to whom and why.

does truth have any defense? it should.

If every perspective were not true then some one could claim to be the sole possessor of truth.
The idea that only one perspective could be true above all others is simply delusional.

Truth is like a great seed or germ that quickens and stimulates the mind. Where there is truth, there is freedom of mental chains and corporal barriers. Where there is truth, there is a new sphere of existence; there is a different approach and attitude to every condition of life.

I think Kabir puts it well in this poem

The Guest is inside you, and also inside me;
you know the sprout is hidden inside the seed.
We are all struggling; none of us has gone far.
Let your arrogance go, and look around inside.

The blue sky opens out further and farther,
the daily sense of failure goes away,
the damage I have done to myself fades,
a million suns come forward with light,
when I sit firmly in that world.

I hear bells ringing that no one has shaken,
inside 'love' there is more joy than we know of,
rain pours down, although the sky is clear of clouds,
there are whole rivers of light.
The universe is shot through in all parts by a single sort of love.
How hard it is to feel that joy in all our four bodies!

Those who hope to be reasonable about it fail.
The arrogance of reason has separated us from that love.
With the word 'reason' you already feel miles away.

How lucky Kabir is, that surrounded by all this joy
he sings inside his own little boat.
His poems amount to one soul meeting another.
These songs are about forgetting dying and loss.
They rise above both coming in and going out.

Haven't read much Kabir at all ...

(...) Do you agree with the above statement? Do you disagree? What, to you, is the nature of Truth?

For many very consequential practical purposes, Truth is at least as much a matter of the expectations and limitations of human minds as of anything else, so yes, I agree to a large extent.

It is not always best to deal with divergent perceptions of truth by exercising patience, but it is definitely wise to be aware and to some extent accepting of those divergences. Enough so to understand that such divergences are not all that often a matter of lying or dishonesty, at the very least.
