Oneness?

Here is yet another page I found at the Stillness Speaks site. May keep me out-of-mischief for some time ...

Advaita is a Sanskrit word meaning “not two” and points to the fundamental oneness of everything—that everything is a part of and made of one substance. Often the question arises, “If it is all one thing, why don’t I experience it that way?” This is confusing oneness for the appearance of sameness. Things can appear different without being separate.

Just look at your hand for a moment. Your fingers are all different from each other, but are they separate? They all arise from the same hand. Similarly, the objects, animals, plants and people in the world are all definitely different in their appearance and functioning. But they are all connected at their source—they come from the same source. This one Being that is behind all life has an infinite number of different expressions that we experience as different objects.

To continue with the hand analogy, your fingers are all made of the same substance. They are made up of similar tissues, cells, atoms, and at the deepest level, subatomic particles. Similarly, when your experience of reality becomes more subtle, you discover that everything is just different expressions of one field of Being.

I don't like how "Oneness" has become a buzzword but the concept it originally means is correct.

You may have a point but I don't think that article uses it as a catchphrase -

Many people have grasped the Oneness and their true nature as Awareness intellectually, but it is not a common or an ongoing experience for them. It seems there is often a gap between an intellectual knowing and a more grounded, knowing-in-your-being kind of knowing. The bridge between these two is, very simply, repeated experiences of Awareness. We tend to only really know something we have experienced a lot.

All the best!

There are no techniques or processes that can cause you to experience Oneness or Presence, and there is no formula for the shift to a deeper knowing and trust. However, spiritual practices and teachings can put you in a place of curiosity about and receptivity to the spontaneous arising of Presence. They make it more likely for a spontaneous experience of Oneness or Presence to arise.

It is probably better to use the foreign word since the English word confuses me, but I am always griping about how there are too many Hindu terms for me. Maybe a more direct translation instead of 'Oneness' ? How about 'Not Two' ? That seems simpler, more memorable. Pro-Two and Not-Two. How does that sound? Book title idea! You may use it. There is no need to thank me. :headmassage:

There was what that other member recently said about Kundalini, but I wasn't convinced it was still meditation at that point where they started to have feelings of flying out of their body. It sounds a little like falling asleep while meditating, but I know nothing of such things. I'd have to get there to that point in order to have an informed opinion; but if it were an experience of one-ity-ness we were after that sounded like one way to get there. Coming out of such a deep mental cessation might be painful as my bottom would probably be numb. Could be dangerous, too, if there were any cats around.

Ha! At the end if all time hinduism will say "told ya so". So its in there but omg.

Brick really i understand metaphysics as actaully sanity. Apparently being sane is incredibly difficult for us!

In christianity jesus is sane the whole society is nuts. Its written down and now the asylum is running amoke with the text justifying their insanity. Where are the doctors? They to are mad.
i believe in god.
Idont believe in god.
I am agnostic.
Mad mad mad

I breathe
Good Doctors breathe while the patient rambles. Bad doctors get into arguments with the patients or are the patients teaching the patients how to be mad.

The nut house mill is the university.

I breathe i do not believe.

Learning takes energy and is therefore painful. One must be driven into it, and in my opinion that usually happens through personal tragedy, pressure, relationship problems and parenting mistakes. Our sufferings drive us to learn different lessons, and so we don't all share the same ones. Our time is short, our age discrimination is rampant. We don't listen to anything that doesn't interest us. Lightning doesn't strike everywhere but takes the path of least resistance.

People tell me that meditation can change this, but they also say meditation relieves pain. So on the one hand meditation allows you to focus, but I imagine the truth is that a little meditation is not enough to cause people to align and learn each other's lessons but only a lot of meditation and a lot of awareness. What would drive a person to seek that? Pain I guess would. Again, the happier person is ignorant, and that's too bad.

The gospels are a special case you know, since it happens inside the Jewish world. That world doesn't map directly to ours. To begin with it doesn't trust language, but we trust in language and try to reach that world through language which is impossible.

Oh no it maps lile an archetype. Multiple archetypes in various cultures different clothing same archetype. It does not matter. Clothing nothimg more. You see the leaf i am looking at the bug. This phenomena happens to ourselves as the mind spins into itself. We are now looking at our selves like a leaf we nl longer see ourselves. I sat in bipolar meetings for 6 months tryimg to study what was going on. They all said "my brain"
Sorry insane.

Since the last century the brain doctors have been manipulated into doing actual research. No longer are they allowed simply to drill holes in people's heads. Within a hundred years we'll have them doing brain upgrades. Stick and carrot they've no choice but to keep reading all those thousands of biology papers and experimenting on mice. Maybe its sweet payback for all of the suffering of the mentally ill over the centuries! Take that you doctors. (I'm kiddin about the sweet payback.)

For me the word "Presence" resonates more than "Oneness".

Yep. In the old days nobody knew what they were doing, but mental illness was so bad that they just tried things.
