Original sin?

Salam,

Do Muslims believe that humans are essentially sinful? Or do they believe that humans are divine in nature and are capable of good deeds (thereby obtaining God's favor)?

Thanks,
I

ALLAH love those people who care for him. no human say that he nevber do mistake or do sin.. its almost impossible. ALLAH have many worshippers like angels.. He create us to do sin or good deeds too. He want us if we do bad then we ask him to forgive us too. Humans are super being who could do what others can't do.

Islam does not teach that human beings are divine in any way, or can be. Divinity is an attribute solely used for the Creator. In Islam we do not have the concept of original sin as it is known to be in Christianity. If you read passages in the Quran about the nature of human beings you will find that doing good and bad in this life are both within reach of the human being himself.

The Quran mentions that before we live this life He asked used: Am I not your lord? And all human beings acknowledged this. Now according to Islamic theology each human being was born with a pure, natural, inclination and belief in our Creator. This is why I mentioned the testification of mankind as quoted from the Quran. And in sayings of the prophet he explains that all of us in this world were initially created by God with this innate belief/acceptance of the Creator. God does not Create people himself as disbelievers. Nor does He Create us from the moment were born and breath our first breath as sinners. He is The Just and in my opinion creating mankind as innate sinners would be hard to reconcile with his nature of being Just. Any sin if due to our own free choice and the result of it.

To summarize, God creates us pure 'white' human beings the moment were born. However, it is obviously understood from the Quran that because of the nature of human beings (free will) and the nature of this worldy life we will all sin. It is however due to our own actions. In chapter ar-Rum (the romans) it says 'corruption has spread on earth and sea because of what the hands of human beings has acquired'. That same verse ends with 'in order that you may return' (from your sins). It is obvious that mischief came because of human beings and lessons in it are about returning to God. And the solution for sinning is turning to God and asking Him directly for forgiveness. The actual Arabic would for repentance means literally 'turning your back on', which makes the double meaning of it very clear. Repenting in Islam is something between the individualand God, without any specific rituals or offer. Moreover, the Quran makes very clear that intention is essential in everything a human being does. 'Everyone gets what he intended', as mentioned in the Quran about the Last Day. A famous saying of Muhammed (pbuh) is that every deed is judged by its its intention first.

If you ask what according to Islam the capability is that is within human beings reach? I.e. To be inherently a sinner or become almost angelic. I would answer that according to my understanding of the Quran both are within each human beings heart. I say heart because from the Quran and sayings of the Prophet this is referred to as the foundation where deeds come from. This is what we should look at when trying to better ourselves. We are able, always with the help of God, to become and reach the true height of human beings according to the Quran. Not lead by his own desires (as the Quran mentions) but in submission to God. But we are also able to become like 'animals', doing things we know by reason is awful but because of being lead by our desires we still insist on doing it. We become the 'lowest of the lowest' as mentioned in the Quran. Whereas originally we have the oppertunity and responsibility as 'represantatives of God' to be much more than that.

I hope this clarifies something.
