Other "Latter Day Saint" denominations

Fluffy

A fool
The wikipedia article List of sects in the Latter Day Saint movement claims that there are 59 groups (both current and defunct) who follow the teachings of Joseph Smith to some degree.

I was wondering what sort of relationship the LDS church has with these other groups and whether any of them are recognised as authoritative in some way.

Hi, Fluffy. I believe the number is actually closer to 100, although some of these may be comprised of no more than a few dozen people. The largest, the Community of Christ, has somewhere on the order of 250,000 members. We who are members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, view them just as we view other Christian churches. We do not believe them to have any more or less authority than the Catholic Church, the Lutheran Church, the Methodist Church, etc. While we may have some things in common with them, we have some things in common with most other Christian churches, too. So as far as we're concerned, they're part of the Christian family, but no more closely related to us than any other church.

As a former LDS elder and a CoC elder, I can tell you that the Only things in common are the years that Joseph Smith 2 was alive + the Book of Mormon and SOME of the Doctrine and Covenants. Other than that they are quite different.

The Restored LDS and Fundamentalist LDS et al.,re different again as are the Strangites and the Church of Christ (Temple Lot.)

I am happy to answer questions if you have any!

I didn't know you used to be LDS, kiwimac. Well, since I've never even been to a Community of Christ Church service, it sounds like you're the guy who can answer Fluffy's questions. Thanks!

Please no sarcasm
Once our family visited the Independence, Missouri, temple site and while there happen to venture into the church building of the "Temple Lot" church. We were given a missionary-type lesson. We all noticed that their presentation consisted mostly of what the LDS were doing wrong and very little of what they actually believed. Interesting.

There's a Community of Christ church within walking distance of my house. It's about the same distance away as our church.

When the debate was occuring over the name change for the church (Community of Christ) a lot of the debate revolved around how we used to describe ourselves which was " I'm a member in the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints NOT THE MORMONS." :D

Hehehe. I bet that was interesting trying to explain to people.

As far as I am concerned there are no other LDS congregations. The SLC one is the LDS Church and its members are Mormons. All other offshoots of the LDS church are their own entity entirely and I do not consider them LDS in any degree:no:

Then maybe you could become a doorman.

And if you work doing that long enough they might put you in charge and make you the forman.
